Characteristics of Humanistic psychology:
One of the greatest strengths of humanistic psychology is that it emphasis individual choices and
responsibility, means it helps to understand a person’s value, his self respect, purpose of life, his preferences
and fulfillment of needs.
Humanistic psychology provides researchers a wide area a flexible framework, for observing human
behaviour because it considers a person in the context of his environment and in conjunction with his
personal perceptions and feelings. There are several a defective which makes humanistic psychology
different from other fields of psychology.
It includes emphasis on subjective meaning, a rejection of determinants and concern for positive growth
rather than pathology. While one might argue that some psychodynamic theories provide a vision of human
growth.
Many psychologists believe that behaviour can be understood objectively but the humanist argued that
this result in conducting that an individual is incapable of understanding there own behaviour Now we will
talk about humanistic therapy and its benefits

Humanistic therapy:
Humanistic therapy adapts a holistic approach that focuses of freewill ,human potential, increases the human
exploration ability. It aims on helping us to develop a strong and healthy sense of self explorer feeling find
meaning and focus on your strength. It is based on assumptions on helping people explore their hidden
qualities, hidden talent, through various types of tests and talk therapy.
It tells us why people need free will? what people feel in what situation? Basically humanistic psychology
and humanistic therapy both go hand in hand to get common modes to acomplish common goals. This
therapy allows people to talk freely about anything without any hestation. Therapies are conducted in such a
way that the patient should feel comfortable and environment should be made easy that patient could tell
you anything.
It also tells people to discover their authentic selves, to find solution to various problems in concerns in
the process. Therapist have to be kind of respectable listener who listens to the problems of patients
attentively without giving any turn or any twist in the conversation or by giving any distraction or by
cutting of the talk.
Humanistic psychologist use various type of therapies in it such as unstructured interviews and
observational methods.
Some important keywords for humanistic therapy are acceptance and growth which clearly means , it
guides to accept the reality and to move on in some cases.
Humanistic therapy also involves a core belief that people are good at heart abd incapable of making the
right choices for themselves. For example they cannot make a right decision and they need your help to
reach a find a right solution. If you don’t hold yourself in high regards, it’s harder to develop your full
potential.

Unstructured interviews:
The un structured interview basically means to ask questions from the patient and patient answers them
freely without any hesitation and numbering of the questions can be changed according to the ease of the
patient. It helps to understand the free will of the patient and how he feels presently.

Observational method:
Observational methods include to observe the person in a nature or in a lab to see what type of reactions a
person shows.

Types of humanistic therapies:

Client centred technique:
It uses active listening technique. The therapist listens and acknowledges, paraphrase your
concerns. This therapy technique believes in the idea of providing a supportive environment
in which you can feel comfortable and have ease and a non judgemental environment is
created the patient is given full trust.
It is also based on the idea of absorbing criticism and disapproval from others that can
destort the way you see yourself. The blocks of personal growth to fulfill life goals.
The client centered therapist will unconditionally accept you even if they disagree with
some acceptance of your behaviour feeling accepted in therapy, no matter what you share,
can help you avoid holding back and to move on.

Gesalt therapy:
It focuses on the skills and techniques that allows you to be aware of your feeling and
emotion. For example, it tells at what reaction to show in what situation.
It also helps us to solve unsolved distrubing conflicts which causes trouble. Gesalt therapy
provides the state of safe emergency, where you can explore in the present moment the
things bothering you. You can omit those things from your life to move on. For example,
you might exlore the belief that your opinions don’t matter to your partner. And you will try
to solve the conflict between you and your partner by sometime listening to their opinion and
sometime telling them to follow your opinion.

Existential therapy:
It aims on searching goals in achieving boards and learning of life. what we want to become
in future? what are your future goals? and how to accomplish them through good deeds.
Existential therapist also helps us to understand the reason why we exist means its tells us

Impact of humanistic psychology:

Emerging in the late 1950’s humanistic psychology began as a reaction against the two school of thought

importance of consciousness and offered a more holistic view of human life.
In 1964 many humanistic psychologists gathered from all around the world and came in Old Say brook,
Conn, to consolidate their movement. Over the next decade humanistic psychology’s ideas informed the
civil rights, women’s liberation and anti war movements and gained widespread popularity in the wider
culture. The humanistic movement has a very positive enormous influence on the lives of people. New fields
of humanism begin to open in academics as well.
It forced people to think more realistically and to think more carefully about their mental health. Now a

comfortable to share anything openly and honestly. He tries to hide nothing and to open up his thoughts
in front of the therapist.
