2.2 Control circuit
The MASTERPULS MP200 is controlled by a Windows CE operating system, running on a single
board computer called NetDCU. This board is directly plugged on the board interface which is
described in the following chapter 2.3. A touch panel with a colour display is provided for the operator
interface (GUI).

The board interface represents a gateway between the application and the electrical / physical
peripheral components as valves, actuators, DA- or AD-converter etc. The NetDCU communicates
with the board interface by a multiplexed parallel interface. This interface consist of 8 bi-directional
address/data lines, an address latch enable signal /ALE, a read signal /RD, a write signal /WR and an
acknowledge signal /ACK. All functions of the hardware can be either activated by writing to or reading
from this parallel interface.

2.3 Interaction with pneumatic devices

The control software uses the GPIO (general purpose I/O) interface of the NetDCU to send commands
and receive status information to and from the compressor control (valves, power supply, pressure
regulator).

2.3.1 Compressor control

According to the set energy level the control software sets the required pressure value and issues
valve open/close commands with the adjusted frequency and pulse length as long as:
- The trigger signal from the release button is set (handpiece or foot switch),
- there is no active error condition concerning an involved device and
- the set SW number (or a multiple of it) is not reached.

Handpiece and foot switch may not be used at the same time, i.e. using the trigger from a second
device while treatment is running will stop it. In single shock mode (set frequency = 0) the button has
to be pressed and released for each trigger.

At start-up the compressor is switched on to set up an initial pressure level. There are no status / error
signals processed by the control software.

2.3.2 Handpiece control

The trigger signal is set as long as the release button is pressed. The control software then executes
the treatment procedure as specified in chapter 2.3.1.

To generate continuous trigger signals the user can keep the button pressed all the time or has to
release it immediately (less then approximately 2 sec.) to enable the auto trigger. In the latter case he
has to push the button again to stop triggering.

The number of SW released is stored at the control device and can be reset manually by a menu
function. The operation mode display at the status line is flashing as long as there is no handpiece
detected.

11-023-02-0313 2-7
2.4 Graphical user interface (GUI)
The MASTERPULS MP200 is operated using a 640x480 pixels colour TFT LCD monitor with touch
screen function and a graphical user interface (GUI). The GUI of the MASTERPULS MP200 is divided
into various areas for displaying different information. The individual controls are arranged in function
groups (see Fig. 2 - 4).

The GUI will be started automatically when the main device is switched on and is terminated
(uncontrolled) when the device is switched off. There will be one single instance and it will be the only
application on the device. It cannot be restarted or stopped manually by the user.

Fig. 2 - 4 GUI Layout

The GUI consists of the following elements:

- Control buttons for navigation, function activation and value adjustment (up / down) at the top and
bottom.

- Parameter display on the left side (set/actual values).

- Status line above the parameter display (mode display, configuration display and alarm / language
icons).

- Main control area on the right side (contents depends on function selection) where graphical
elements will be indicated like buttons, parameters, specific function (e.g. error list, confirmation
inquiries), symbols (e.g. application type, alarm icon, language flags), text input (soft keyboard) or
cursers (waiting / busy).

To simplify control operations, all buttons and lists always have a similar style. The user can push the
displayed controls to activate the assigned functions but can not change their layout (e.g. resize,
move). If a function is not available or locked then it will be either not displayed or marked as not
accessible (greyed text).

2-8 11-023-02-0313
The default GUI view will be the parameter adjustment function, i.e. it will be shown at start-up and
when other views are closed. All other functions may be closed by “Menu exit” and “Back” buttons
from the top control row. The current selection is highlighted at the status line. A new selection
immediately updates all mode dependent GUI elements, e.g. the parameter display and the error
message display. The selection is stored permanently and will be loaded at start-up.

2.5 Pneumatic system

The pneumatic system consists of the pressure control valve (4), air couplers (1,6), safety relief valve
(5), air distributor valve (3) and the R-SW handpiece which consist of the air valve (8) and the
handpiece itself (7).

Fig. 2 - 5 Pneumatic system (without compressor)

The output pressure of the pressure control valve (4) is operated by a 0 - 5 V signal from the controller
which is connected to the NetDCU. A pressure sensor inside the pressure control valve controls the
output pressure. This output signal of the control valve (0 - 5 V) is additionally checked by the
NetDCU. If the NetDCU triggers the air valve (8) inside the handpiece (7), a therapy wave is
generated.

The safety relief valve (5) checks the pressure to the handpiece. If the input pressure is greater than
5.5 bar, the valve opens and limits the input pressure to the handpiece. The minimum output pressure
of the pressure control valve to trigger the air valve inside the handpiece is 1.0 bar. The maximum
output pressure is 5.0 bar.

The air distributor valve (3) switch the air pressure to R-SW handpiece connector 1 or 2.

5.1.1 Parameter adjustment
At start-up a daily reminder window is opened to check/empty the compressor condensate. Confirm
with the ok-button.

Fig. 5 - 1 Daily reminder to check/empty the compressor condensate

The last used set values for the current application type will be displayed. They are displayed flashing
until the user confirms them by pushing the configuration shortcut at the bottom control row or the
figures itself. Consequently changed values have to be stored permanently.

The following set values will be displayed:

- Shock wave energy (applied pressure per shock wave)
- Shock wave number (alternatively total energy)
- Shock wave frequency

The following actual values will be displayed:

- Shock wave number

Fig. 5 - 2 Parameter adjustment

11-026-02-0313 5-7
The parameter adjustment function displays at the main control area is a selection of all adjustable
parameters. If a parameter is selected (one at a time), it is highlighted and the assigned set value at
the parameter view can be altered with the up/down buttons from the top/bottom control row (during
treatment only F-SW energy and frequency may be changed):

- Shock wave number setting ranges from 0 to 19.999 (default = 0) and can be adjusted in steps of
10 (below 100) or 100 (above 100). Attempts to adjust a value outside this range will be ignored. If
the up/down buttons are held for 1-2 seconds then the value is increased/decreased automatically
(auto-repeat function). Setting the shock wave number to 0 turns off limit monitoring (displayed as
“-“). Otherwise treatment stops automatically when each time the actual value reaches a multiple
of the set value.

- Shock wave energy level setting ranges from 1.0 bar to 5.0 bar and can be adjusted in steps of
0.2 bar. Attempts to adjust a value outside the valid range will be ignored.

- Shock wave frequency setting ranges from 0 to 21 Hz and can be adjusted in steps of 0.5 Hz
(below 4 Hz) or 1 Hz (above 4 Hz). Attempts to adjust a value outside the valid range will be
ignored. Setting the frequency to 0 turns off automatic frequency control, i.e. each shock wave
requires a separate trigger signal (“single shock mode”, displayed as “-”).

11-026-02-0313 5-9
5.1.2.2 Warnings
The status messages generated by the MP200 are classified in three different types:

- Information
An informal reply is used to inform the user about treatment conditions. Further use of the
machine is possible.

- Warnings
A warning reply is used to inform the user about circumstances that may or will lead to a situation
in which an error is generated. After acknowledgement, further use of the machine is possible.

- Errors
An error reply is used whenever a defect or failure of a part of the device is detected or this defect
or failure does not allow completing a user command. This implies that major parts of the machine
are still working properly and the machine can be used without danger for patient or operator for
certain uses.

Fig. 5 - 4 Warnings

Errors inhibit further treatment, warnings only interrupt current treatment. The warning / error
messages will be signalled by an alarm icon at the status line:

The user can push the icon to display a list of all currently active warnings at the main control area.
The messages are displayed in the order they were detected and the user can scroll through the list
with the up/down buttons from the top/bottom control row. The scroll position will be initialized to show
the latest entry.

If a new warning is detected then it is automatically displayed to be acknowledged by the user

(Ok/back buttons). If all warning conditions disappear then the alarm icon is removed.

For detailed information of the warnings refer to chapter Status messages 5.2.

5-10 11-026-02-0313
5.1.2.3 Print

Fig. 5 - 5 Print menu

The following reports may be printed to a PCL3 capable printer (medical grade only) connected via
USB:

- Configuration report
- Warnings report
- Treatment protocol

Report generation is started by selecting the assigned menu entry and pushing the “Ok” button from
the bottom control row.

The treatment protocol also may be exported to a memory stick (similar to the software update
function). The export function will create a .csv file (comma separated values) which may be viewed
e.g. with MS Excel. If there is an active (loaded) configuration, then only the assigned protocol is
printed/exported, otherwise all available protocols.

11-026-02-0313 5-11
5.1.2.4 Data transfer

Fig. 5 - 6 Data transfer menu

The following data can be stored on a USB stick connected via the USB connector:

- Export treatment data

- Backup settings
- Restore settings

Data storage is started by selecting the assigned menu entry and pushing the “Ok” button from the
bottom control row.

The export function will create a .csv file (comma separated values) which may be viewed e.g. with
MS Excel. If there is an active (loaded) configuration, then only the assigned protocol is
printed/exported, otherwise all available protocols.

The backup/restore function allows to save all settings (configuration, treatment data) to an USB
memory stick to be reloaded later, e.g. when the control unit needs to be replaced. The procedure is
similar to the software update function. It is recommended to do this regularly.

5.1.2.5 Exit user interface

The Exit button / function finishes the running process of netdcu and saves all data. The screen gets
white. The Masterpuls 200 is ready to switch off.

XXXXX – YY – ZZZZ. If a replacement of a part with such a number is necessary, note the number of
the old and new part.

For accurate and fast spare part supply and return, a repair label should be attached to the old part
and a service report completed including:

- Serial number of the system

- Date of replacement
- Total operating hours at replacement
- Handpiece trigger counter at replacement
- Total trigger counter at replacement
- Part number and serial number of the old part
