Some Centurion residents have been caught

in the grip of sinkholes. Across the city,
sinkholes have formed, each taking years to
repair. One of the largest, and of the most
concern to residents is the one in Clifton
Avenue, Lyttelton Manor.
This sinkhole has been a major concern
to residents of Clifton Avenue since March
2014 when a water pipe burst on four dif-
ferent occasions, leading to the formation of
the sinkhole.
“Sinkholes are occurring far too fre-
quently in Centurion and particularly in
Ward 57. The occurrence of sinkholes leads
to the depreciation of property value and dis-
location of traffic. It also causes insecurity
among residents who never know whether
they could be the next to be affected,” said
DA ward councillor Clive Napier.
Napier said residents in Clifton Avenue
had tried to sell their houses, but were un-
able to do so. “Nobody wants to buy a house
right next to a sinkhole. You never know if
the house will be the next to collapse.”
One of the major concerns was the ageing
water infrastructure. Leaking water pipes
and meters were considered the main causes
for the formation of sinkholes.
Dr Matthys Dippenaar, geologist at the
University of Pretoria, said, “Any concen-

An angry landlord of Celtisdal in Centurion as an IT administrator and could easily
decided to wreck his own property – caus-
ing damage of almost
R20 000 – after he could
not get rid of a non-pay-
ing tenant.
Shaun Nortje, who
owns a two-bedroom flat
in the Havana complex,
made an appointment
with his tenant Keith
Kinnear (51) about two
weeks ago to discuss the
non-payment issue.
This was what Kinnear
believed would happpen.
“He pitched with two Keith Kinnear in front of his destroy- dealing with the case

But Nortje was apparently not
willing to negotiate. Kinnear
said Nortje made racist remarks

the kitchen and bathroom, the door
locks and took the prepaid electricity box
with him.
Kinnear has laid charges against Nortje
and the Wierdabrug police are
investigating a case of malicious
damage to property and intimi-
dation against Nortje.
Kinnear and his two chil-
dren have since been living
without a working toilet, water
or electricity.
“We are living like squatters,”
a desperate Kinnear told 5HNRUG on
Tuesday morning, looking as wrecked as
the only bathroom in the flat.
He has to use his neighbours’ bathroom
to clean up and ‘borrow’ electricity to pre-
pare food.

ber last year, he still had a well-paying job

For the past seven months, a couple from
Centurion has been fighting a fierce battle
against a rare brain disease slowly killing
their three-year-old toddler.
There is nothing Gerda Jakobs (38) and
her life-partner Roulien Heymans (37) can
do to ease their little girl’s pain, except dish
out aspirin for the headaches and continuous
strokes.
Anevay Jakobs (her name means to be
superior) had suffered two strokes before her
fourth birthday. She was diagnosed with the
disease Moyamoya in August last year, and
if she does not undergo an operation soon,
she might die.
Worldwide, only 300 000 cases of the
disease have been documented. Only 20
children in South Africa with this disease
have undergone surgery. However, surgery
does not cure the disease, it only delays it.

Sister Mieke Opperman, unit manager of the
obstetric unit at Netcare Unitas hospital, had
a pleasant surprise when Bernardine Visser,
a baby she helped deliver 25 years ago,
became a registered nurse at Unitas.
Opperman has been the unit manager of
the obstetric unit at the hospital since the
unit’s 1989 inception. Obstetrics has been a
life-long passion for this veteran midwife.
During her tenure at Unitas Opperman and
her team have delivered a staggering 37
751 babies. Visser had been the 329th baby
delivered at Unitas, and delivered by Opper-
man herself.

The disease causes the arteries to narrow
and thicken, preventing blood and oxygen
from reaching the brain, which results in
stroke. “It is so rare in South Africa that
there is only one neurosurgeon who has
focused his specialisation on this disease. Dr
Llewellyn Padayachee has operated on only
20 Moyamoya cases in the last seven years,”
Anevay’s mother Gerda said.
“The fact that only one doctor is skilled
enough to operate on patients with Moy-
amoya is troublesome. We have a medical
aid, but we are forced to take our child to
a state hospital – the Red Cross Children’s
hospital in Cape Town. She was examined
by Dr Padayachee, but not even he could
give us a 100% guarantee that the hospital
would provide the necessary after-care. If
she does not get this, she could die. I spent
two days in that hospital and I can tell you
some horror stories.”
In November 2013, Anevay was jumping
applied to be a midwife at Unitas, she was
deeply touched. “I immediately went back to
check the records and saw that I was the first
person to hold her in my arms after she was
born via Caesarean section on 4 May 1990.
I just couldn’t believe what a wonderful
coincidence it was,” said Opperman.
Visser said she first became interested in
nursing when in high school, and completed
a Bachelor of nursing science at the Univer-
sity of Pretoria.
Before applying at Unitas, Visser com-
pleted two years of community service at
Tshwane district hospital. “It’s an extremely
rewarding field and, best of all, there is
usually a happy outcome. I am so looking
forward to working at the hospital where I

Jakobs rushed her to a doctor, where she was

Only months later she was diagnosed with
Moyamoya.
There are no support groups for Moy-
amoya victims in South Africa, but Jakobs
has been in contact with a support group in
Zurich, Switzerland. “I have managed to
make contact with a doctor with specialised
knowledge in this field.

Switzerland, but it is going to cost a lot of
money. Our medical aid does not cover over-

The Daniel family from Hennopspark are
still reeling in shock after a car ploughed
into their fence just after 19:00 on Monday
evening.
“When the driver of the car got out, my
dad immediately went up to see if he was
okay. His face was bloody as he had hit his

M-Net Magic in Motion Academy.
The 12-month long internship initiative
is M-Net’s corporate social investment
project, aimed at developing local talent in
the film and television industry.
Ramputa (26), a Centurion resident
originally from Soshanguve, said he ap-
plied for the academy when M-Net visited
his college, Boston Media House, to invite
students to the M-Net Magic in Motion
Expo last year.
“It was a long process, but definitely
worthwhile. I went to two interviews and
assessments, which were a bit tricky be-
cause I am used to studying and writing a
test, not being interviewed,” he said.
Ramputa fell in love with the camera
when his uncle showed him the true art of
photography and how to capture the best
moments.

afternoon filled with laughter and joy as
they created an awareness for the fight
against cancer. “Through the generosity
of the students, Abbotts College Centu-
rion raised over R6 000 for Cansa,” said
Abbotts College spokesperson Christelle
Wolmarans.

The pharmacy at Netcare Unitas hospital

held its eighth annual charity morning tea on
Saturday.
This year the pharmacy collected goods
for the Via Nova School in East Lynne.
Via Nova caters for pupils with special
educational needs, specialising in care for
those with severe intellectual barriers.
The school admits children with special
educational needs (LSEN) from all over
Gauteng, and from other provinces in certain
cases. There are 462 pupils in the school this
year.
According to Susan du Plessis, event
organiser, a different beneficiary is chosen
every year and instead of asking for money,
they encourage their guests to bring much
needed goods for these organisations, in-
cluding food and toiletries.
“This particular school also has a resi-
dence for several of their pupils and they
have a great need for curtains, shoes and
swimwear, besides food and other necessi-
ties,” Du Plessis said.
The function was held at the Unitas
lecture hall and roughly 140 people at-
tended.

The Cancer Association of South Africa
(Cansa) hosted a fun-filled team experience
night in honour of cancer survivors on Satur-
day.
Relay for Life was held at the Pretoria
military sports club, Thaba Tshwane. It
started at 18:00 on Saturday and ended at
06:00 on Sunday.
At a relay event, teams of between 10 and
15 friends, neighbours, families and co-
workers commit to having at least one team
member walking around a track at all times
for 18 to 24 hours.
More than 200 cancer survivors attended
with members of the public also taking part.
“The aim of the event is to educate the
public about cancer and providing hope and
support to cancer survivors,” Anita Snyder
from Cansa said.
The survivors also had an opportunity to
tell those present there was life after being had been named the beneficiary of proceeds
diagnosed with cancer and one could still from the event. The home cares for 29 can-
live a normal life. cer sufferers for a period of six weeks at a
Cansa Tipuana Care Home in Pretoria time, before the next intake follows.

While the property market has been doing
well in most metropolitan areas throughout
the start of 2015 it would seem Pretoria in
particular is booming.
Joanie la Grange from Leapfrog Property
Group in Pretoria says agents have lists of
prospective buyers lined up.
“We’re seeing a lot of movement – espe-
cially up to R3 million. If a property of R1
million or less (normally sectional title prop-
erties in this range) comes on the market
they sell within days,” explains la Grange.
Supporting this is the fact that Leapfrog
sales in the area are up 20% year on year for
January and February. It’s hardly surprising
as the Pretoria residential market is being
fed by buyers from both Johannesburg and
Midrand as well as from further afield.
La Grange also believes more people
now have access to housing subsidies and
developers are regaining their taste for new
projects. The city has seen a lot of property
growth in recent years. The Midstream
development in Centurion being one of the
most notable. Other areas offering good
value for money with high demand is Preto-
ria East and North.

With no relief from load-shedding and rolling
blackouts on the near horizon, an increasing
number of sectional title (ST) schemes are
making plans to install generators, solar pan-
els and other equipment to keep the lights on.
Many are also having to look at additional
tanks and booster pumps to secure a steady
supply of water when council pumping sta-
tions are also affected by load-shedding and
the mains water supply dries up.
“However,” says Andrew Schaefer, MD
of leading national property management
company Trafalgar, “trustees must make sure
they follow the correct procedures before
purchasing such equipment for their schemes.
The first step is usually to explain to owners
why this is the best option despite concerns
over noise, fumes and aesthetics. For most
schemes a single large generator (or solar
power plant) can serve the whole complex.”
Those owners who think it might be a
better idea if each of them had their own
portable generator, he says, may need to be
reminded that the Sectional Titles Act and
rules prohibit owners from doing anything
that is likely to be a nuisance to other owners
and from making aesthetically displeasing
changes to the exterior of their units - and the
trustees are required to uphold these rules, so
there is a possibility of serious friction over
individual installations.

He’s been labelled by many golf experts as
South Africa’s next player to win a major
title. On Sunday, Pretoria’s own George
Coetzee came another step closer to that
dream when he won the prestigious Tshwane
Open with a brilliant display of golf.
Coetzee snatched away the title of 2015
Tshwane Open champion from 155 other top
professional players.
This victory ensured Coetzee his second
win on the European Tour, after he also won
the Joburg Open tournament last year. It was
also his seventh victory since he joined the
professional ranks.
Sunday’s victory was probably much
sweeter for Coetzee, achieving it on his
home course at Pretoria Country Club. It
was on this course where he learned to play
the game and where he won his first amateur
tournament as a 10-year-old boy.
To make his win even better for local
golfing fanatics, Coetzee had to chase the
score of yet another local player, Jacques
Blaauw, to win the tournament. Blaauw, a
Centurion resident and member of the Els
Club at Copperleaf in Centurion, where the
first two Tshwane Open tournaments were
played in 2013 and 2014, eventually finished
second on Sunday.
At the end of the third round, 29-year-old
Blaauw was still tied for 22nd place after
206 shots (-4). But he shot a brilliant 61 on
the last day of the tournament to tie up his
score at 271 (-13), four strokes ahead of two
other South Africans, Dean Burmester and
Tjaart van der Walt, and Craig Lee from
Scotland.
Coetzee, however, was one of the leaders
after the third round. With his overnight
score on 201 (-9), Coetzee had to play at
least five shots under par on the final day
if he wanted to win the tournament. And
that’s exactly what this old Affies boy did.
He could fill in a flawless 65 on his score-
card for the last round, which included five
birdies.
His final birdie was on the 17th hole
which meant Coetzee just had to keep a cool
head on the 18th and only had to play on par
to win his second tournament on the Euro-
pean Tour before his home crowd.

Dié klub is gesetel in Maraboestraat 100B
(reg langs Uitsigweg) in Rooihuiskraal en
die naam van die nuwe klub is die Eagles
Stoeiklub.
Greyson is ’n ervare stoeier en hy sal
aanvanklik ook een van die klub se twee
afrigters wees. Die klub is reeds voorlopig
geaffilieer by die Gauteng-Noord Stoeiver-
eniging. Volgens Greyson wil hulle graag
fokus op ouer-betrokkenheid en aan die klub
’n familie-atmosfeer gee.
In hierdie stadium fokus hulle op voor-
skoolse- en laerskoolkinders, maar beplan
om die klub later uit te brei. Ervare stoeiers is
egter welkom om aan te sluit.
