Some Centurion residents have been caught

in the grip of sinkholes. Across the city,
sinkholes have formed, each taking years to
repair. One of the largest, and of the most
concern to residents is the one in Clifton
Avenue, Lyttelton Manor.
This sinkhole has been a major concern
to residents of Clifton Avenue since March
2014 when a water pipe burst on four dif-
ferent occasions, leading to the formation of
the sinkhole.
“Sinkholes are occurring far too fre-
quently in Centurion and particularly in
Ward 57. The occurrence of sinkholes leads
to the depreciation of property value and dis-
location of traffic. It also causes insecurity
among residents who never know whether
they could be the next to be affected,” said
DA ward councillor Clive Napier.
Napier said residents in Clifton Avenue
had tried to sell their houses, but were un-
able to do so. “Nobody wants to buy a house
right next to a sinkhole. You never know if
the house will be the next to collapse.”
One of the major concerns was the ageing
water infrastructure. Leaking water pipes
and meters were considered the main causes
for the formation of sinkholes.
Dr Matthys Dippenaar, geologist at the
University of Pretoria, said, “Any concen-

An angry landlord of Celtisdal in Centurion as an IT administrator and could easily
decided to wreck his own property – caus-
ing damage of almost
R20 000 – after he could
not get rid of a non-pay-
ing tenant.
Shaun Nortje, who
owns a two-bedroom flat
in the Havana complex,
made an appointment
with his tenant Keith
Kinnear (51) about two
weeks ago to discuss the
non-payment issue.
This was what Kinnear
believed would happpen.
“He pitched with two Keith Kinnear in front of his destroy- dealing with the case

But Nortje was apparently not
willing to negotiate. Kinnear
said Nortje made racist remarks
towards him before taking out

the kitchen and bathroom, the door
locks and took the prepaid electricity box
with him.
Kinnear has laid charges against Nortje
and the Wierdabrug police are
investigating a case of malicious
damage to property and intimi-
dation against Nortje.
Kinnear and his two chil-
dren have since been living
without a working toilet, water
or electricity.
“We are living like squatters,”
a desperate Kinnear told 5HNRUG on
Tuesday morning, looking as wrecked as
the only bathroom in the flat.
He has to use his neighbours’ bathroom
to clean up and ‘borrow’ electricity to pre-
pare food.

ber last year, he still had a well-paying job

For the past seven months, a couple from
Centurion has been fighting a fierce battle
against a rare brain disease slowly killing
their three-year-old toddler.
There is nothing Gerda Jakobs (38) and
her life-partner Roulien Heymans (37) can
do to ease their little girl’s pain, except dish
out aspirin for the headaches and continuous
strokes.
Anevay Jakobs (her name means to be
superior) had suffered two strokes before her
fourth birthday. She was diagnosed with the
disease Moyamoya in August last year, and
if she does not undergo an operation soon,
she might die.
Worldwide, only 300 000 cases of the
disease have been documented. Only 20
children in South Africa with this disease
have undergone surgery. However, surgery
does not cure the disease, it only delays it.

Sister Mieke Opperman, unit manager of the
obstetric unit at Netcare Unitas hospital, had
a pleasant surprise when Bernardine Visser,
a baby she helped deliver 25 years ago,
became a registered nurse at Unitas.
Opperman has been the unit manager of
the obstetric unit at the hospital since the
unit’s 1989 inception. Obstetrics has been a
life-long passion for this veteran midwife.
During her tenure at Unitas Opperman and
her team have delivered a staggering 37
751 babies. Visser had been the 329th baby
delivered at Unitas, and delivered by Opper-
man herself.

The disease causes the arteries to narrow
and thicken, preventing blood and oxygen
from reaching the brain, which results in
stroke. “It is so rare in South Africa that
there is only one neurosurgeon who has
focused his specialisation on this disease. Dr
Llewellyn Padayachee has operated on only
20 Moyamoya cases in the last seven years,”
Anevay’s mother Gerda said.
“The fact that only one doctor is skilled
enough to operate on patients with Moy-
amoya is troublesome. We have a medical
aid, but we are forced to take our child to
a state hospital – the Red Cross Children’s
hospital in Cape Town. She was examined
by Dr Padayachee, but not even he could
give us a 100% guarantee that the hospital
would provide the necessary after-care. If
she does not get this, she could die. I spent
two days in that hospital and I can tell you
some horror stories.”
In November 2013, Anevay was jumping
applied to be a midwife at Unitas, she was
deeply touched. “I immediately went back to
check the records and saw that I was the first
person to hold her in my arms after she was
born via Caesarean section on 4 May 1990.
I just couldn’t believe what a wonderful
coincidence it was,” said Opperman.
Visser said she first became interested in
nursing when in high school, and completed
a Bachelor of nursing science at the Univer-
sity of Pretoria.
Before applying at Unitas, Visser com-
pleted two years of community service at
Tshwane district hospital. “It’s an extremely
rewarding field and, best of all, there is
usually a happy outcome. I am so looking
forward to working at the hospital where I

Jakobs rushed her to a doctor, where she was

There are no support groups for Moy-
amoya victims in South Africa, but Jakobs
has been in contact with a support group in
Zurich, Switzerland. “I have managed to
make contact with a doctor with specialised
knowledge in this field.

money. Our medical aid does not cover over-

The Daniel family from Hennopspark are
still reeling in shock after a car ploughed
into their fence just after 19:00 on Monday
evening.
“When the driver of the car got out, my
dad immediately went up to see if he was
okay. His face was bloody as he had hit his

“As my dad and the man spoke, he
reached into his car, got his cellphone and a
