Co-ordinate Geometry Questions

1. The line I passes through the points M(6,6) and N(0, -2).

Determine:
i. The gradient of the line, I

Y 2−Y 1
Gradient =
X 2−X 1
−2−6 −8
= =
0−6 −6

ii. The equation of the line, l

Y = mx + c
6 = 1.3(6) + c
6 = 7.8
c = -7.8 + 6 = -1.8

iii. The midpoint of the line segment, MN

X 2+ X 1 Y 2+Y 1
2 2

0+6 −2+6
2 2

64
22

=3,2

iv. The length of the line segment, MN

MN = √ ( X 2−X 1)2 +(Y 2−Y 1)2

= √ (0−6)2 +(−2−6)2

= √ (−6)2 +(−8)2

= √ 36+64

= √ 100 = 10
2. The equation of the line R is y = 4x + 5.

i. State the gradient of any line that is parallel to R

M=4

ii. Determine the equation of the line parallel to R that passes through the point (2,-6).
-6 = 4(2) + c
-6 = 8 + c
c = -8 – 6 = -14
3. A straight line, L has equation 5x – 2y = 9.

i. Write this equation in the form y = mx + c.

-2 = 1(5) + 9

ii. Hence, state the gradient of the line, L.

-0.5

iii. Find the equation of the line through (0, 2) perpendicular to L.

2 = 2 (0) + c
2=0+c
c=0+2=2
