The Standard Form of the Equation of a Circle

The standard equation of a circle with center at (h, k) and a radius of r units is (𝑥 − ℎ) 2 + (𝑦 − 𝑘) 2 = 𝑟 2. The values of h and
k indicate that the circle is translated h units horizontally and k units vertically from the origin.
If the center of the circle is at the origin (0,0), the equation of the circle is x 2 + y2 = r2.

Finding the equation of the circle given the center and Determine the center (h, k) and the radius(r) of the
radius. circle given its standard form.
Ex. 1: What is the equation of a circle with center at the origin Ex. 4: Determine the center and the radius of the circle
and a radius of 8 km? x2 + y2 = 64, and draw its graph.
Given: C(0,0) r = 8 Solution: C(h, k) C(0,0)
Solution: h = 0; k = 0; r= 8 r2 = 64 √𝑟 2 =√64  r = 8
x +y =r
2 2 2
Ans. C (0, 0) r = 8
x2 + y2 = 82
x2 + y2 = 64

Ex. 2: What is the equation of a circle with center at (5, 3)

and a radius of 4 km?
Given: C(5,3) r = 4 C(0,0)
Solution: h = 5; k = 3; r = 4
(x – h)2 + (y – k)2 = r2
(𝑥 – 5) 2 + (𝑦 − 3) 2 = 42
r=8
(𝑥 – 5) 2 + (𝑦 – 3) 2 = 16

Ex. 3: What is the equation of a circle with center at (-6,3) Ex. 5: Determine the center and the radius of the circle
and a radius of 13 km? (x – 2)2 + (y + 3)2 = 25, and draw its graph.
Given: C(-6,3) r =13 Solution: C(h, k) C( 2, – 3)
Solution: h = - 6 , k = 3, r =13 r2 = 25 √𝑟 2 =√25 r = 5
(x – h)2 + (y – k)2 = r2 Ans. C(2, –3) r = 5
(x – (- 6))2 + (y – 3)2 =132
(𝑥 + 6) 2 + (𝑦 − 3) 2 = 132
(𝑥 + 6) 2 + (𝑦 − 3) 2 = 169
