DLP No: 1 Learning Area: General Mathematics Grade Level: XI Quarter: 1 Duration: 60 mins
Represents real – life situations using functions, including
Learning Competency Code: M11GM-Ia-1
piece – wise functions.
A function relates an input to an output.
Key It is like a machine that has an input and an output. The domain is the input while the range is
Concepts/Understanding the output. The domain is an independent value while the range depends upon the value of the
to be Developed domain. The machine is the function.
Piecewise functions are functions in pieces.
Objectives At the end of the lesson, 75% of the students will be able to:
Knowledge Define function, piece – wise function, domain and range;
Skills Site real-life situations where function is applied; solve equations involving functions;
Attitude Display proper hygiene; and
Values Maka - tao
Content Piece – wise function
Learning Resources LM’s, TG’s, chalk and board
Procedures
Introductory Activity What is function? One to one relationship
(15 mins) - Many to one relationship
Can you site an example of a thing or a situation where you considered a function?
- GF and BF relationship
- Toothbrush
- Napkin
What is piece-wise function?
- Functions that are in pieces (actually they don’t really know)
Example:
- Electric Fan
- Blender
Motivation.
Magic Box
Which of these machines, if you know the input, you can determine a single or unique
output easily?
- a, c, d and f
Is machine e a function?
- No, because the output is two; positive and negative.
In each group, site at least one real-life situation the same with the magic box where an input gives
an output out from a certain rule. (ex. Automatic Tubig Machine - ATM)
In your example, what is the product?
(water)
How did you come up with the output?
(by inserting one – peso (1) coin, the output will come out)
Analysis ( 5 mins)
Was there an instance where the output cannot be determined?
(yes, if not one - peso coin is inserted, like 25 centavo coin)
Are there instances in your life where functions can be applied? How?
(yes, by studying hard i got good grades)
What is the output of the following?
1. Printer (hard copy)
Abstraction (5 mins) 2. Bank ATM (money)
Does the output affect the input?
(no, only the input affects the output)
Application (15 mins) What do you think is the output in the following input following these rules?
1. f(x)=

Application
1. If x = 1,2,3,4,5
Then the output are, 11, 14, 17, 20, 23
2. If x = 1,2,3,4,5
Then the output are, 2, 6, 10, 14, 18
Assessment
2. Function – a relation where each element in the domain (input) is related to only one value in the range
(output) by some rule.
- One to one relationship
- Many to one relationship
3. Domain – the set of all possible values that the variable x can take.
4. Range – the set of all possible values that the variable x can take.
5. Piece – wise function – function that are in pieces
6. f(x) = 3x – 8 8. f(x) = 6 – 7x
f(2) = 3(2) – 8 f(-1) = 6 – 7(-1)
f(2) = 6 – 8 f(-1) = 6 +7
f(2) = -2 f(-1) = 13
7. f(x) = 2x – 4 9. f(x) = x2 – 4
f(2) = 2(2) – 4 f(-2) = (-2)2 – 4
f(2) = 4 – 4 f(-2) = 4 – 4
f(2) = 0 f(-2) = 0
