1. What is a computer?

2. What is computing?
Computing is the process of using computer technology to complete a given goal-
oriented task. Computing may encompass the design and development of software
and hardware systems for a broad range of purposes - often structuring, processing
and managing any kind of information - to aid in the pursuit of scientific studies,
making intelligent systems, and creating and using different media for
entertainment and communication.

Computing has also been defined as a branch of engineering science that deals with
the systematic study of algorithmic processes, which are used to describe and
transform information.
3. What is a hardware?

Hardware is the visible and touchable portion of a computer. It is the physical component of the
computer, and this component consists of circuit boards, ICs, and other electronics,.

refers to the physical elements that make up a computer or electronic system and
everything else involved that is physically tangible. This includes the monitor, hard
drive, memory and the CPU. Hardware works hand-in-hand with firmware and
software to make a computer function.

Hardware is a broad term that refers to all the physical parts that make up a
computer. The internal hardware devices that make up the computer and ensure
that it is functional are called components, while external hardware devices that are
not essential to a computer’s functions are called peripherals.

4. What is a software?

Software, in its most general sense, is a set of instructions or programs

instructing a computer to do specific tasks.

Software is a generic term used to describe computer programs that run on

PCs, mobile phones, tablets, or other smart devices.

Software is often used to describe all the functional aspects of a computer

that do not refer to its physical components (hardware). Scripts,
applications, programs and a set of instructions are all terms often used to
describe software.

Everything that “runs” on a computer, from an operating system, to a

diagnostic tool, video game, or app can be defined as software.

5. What are processors?

A processor is an integrated electronic circuit that performs the calculations that

run a computer. A processor performs arithmetical, logical, input/output (I/O) and
other basic instructions that are passed from an operating system (OS). Most other
processes are dependent on the operations of a processor.

Processors are found in many modern electronic devices, including PCs,

smartphones, tablets, and other handheld devices. Their purpose is to
receive input in the form of program instructions and execute trillions of
calculations to provide the output that the user will interface with.

A processor includes an arithmetical logic and control unit (CU), which

measures capability in terms of the following:

 Ability to process instructions at a given time.

 Maximum number of bits/instructions.
 Relative clock speed.
