1. The figure shows a car moving forward along a road. The road goes over a hill.

The picture below shows a speed–time graph for the car shown above.

a. State the speed of the car before it reaches the hill.

1o m/sec
b. State what is meant by the term acceleration.
Acceleration is the change in velocity with time. Its unit is m/sec2
c. Analyse the graph and write down the coordinates of the point when the car is
accelerating.

(4.5, 7)

d. The journey shown in the graph is a total distance of 83m. Calculate the average
speed of the car.

Average speed= Total distance/ Total time

= 83/9 = 9.2 m/sec

2. The picture below shows the car moving forward along a level road at a constant
speed.

a. State the direction of the driving force acting on the car.

Forward/ Right
b. Suggest why there has to be a driving force to keep the car moving at constant speed.
There has to be a driving force to overcome the effects of friction which might
interfere with the speed of the car and is likely to slower it down. In order to
ensure constant speed, constant force has to continuously applied.
c. The car engine uses gasoline (petrol) to do work to move the car along the road.
Write down the form of energy that describes the useful energy change as the car
moves.
The gasoline provides ..........................chemical................................................. energy that is
changed into the ........................mechanical/ kinetic................................................... energy
of the moving car

3. Two athletes Ron and Tim are running on a track. A graph of their velocity over time
is shown below,

a. Discuss the motion of Ron and Tim on the track.

Tim’s motion is uniformly accelerated whereas Ron’s motion shows uniform
acceleration in opposite direction. Ron has negative acceleration (the magnitude of its
velocity is increasing in the negative y- axis so, direction is opposite) whereas Tim has
positive acceleration.
b. Interpret the nature of gradients for both of the athletes.s
For Tim- gradient will be positive
For Ron- gradient will be negative
