Exercise No. 8
Importing CSV (Excel) coordinates into QGIS
Many times, the GIS data comes in a table or an Excel spreadsheet. If you have a list
of latitude /longitude coordinates, you can easily import this data in your GIS project.
For this exercise, you are going to import coordinates as shown in the table into
QGIS.
Materials:
municipalities.shp (GIS data Leyte)
Step 1. Copy the data above into the Excel spreadsheet and convert them into
decimal degrees
Step 2. Copy the converted data into new Excel spreadsheet using the following as
columns: When complete, save your file into comma delimited (csv) format as Leyte
Study Site
Step 3. Open QGIS. Click Open Data Source then click vector and add
municipalities.shp file from the GIS data Leyte folder. Double click the layer and in
the Symbology, adjust the opacity.
Step 4. Click Open Data Source and scroll and click Delimited Text. Find the file name
Leyte Study Site, Add and then click Close. Open Attribute Table of the Leyte Study
Site and examine.
