SmartRunway & SmartLanding Overview

• Honeywell’s Runway Awareness & Advisory System (RAAS) was
launched in 2003 to directly address the incursion issue
• RAAS has evolved into SmartRunway and a new product SmartLanding
(to directly address the runway excursion issue)
• SmartRunway offers improved situational awareness for the flight crew
in order to help lower the probability of runway incursion incidents and
accidents by providing timely aural and visual messages to the flight
crew during ground taxi, takeoff (including rejected takeoffs), final “Approaching
approach, and landing/roll-out operations Three One”
– New advisories, visual alerting on terrain display and G/S Cancel button
muting differentiate SmartRunway from original RAAS
• SmartLanding provides the crew indication in the case of non-stabilized
approaches and the potential for long landings which could result in
runway excursions. It also warns flight crews in the event of transition
altitude barometric altimeter errors due to setting or system errors
• Both products are simple upgrade to Mk V & Mk VII EGPWS units
– RAAS currently available on select EGPWM EPIC aircraft

SmartRunway & SmartLanding address key NTSB issues!

How It Works and Other Items of Interest

• Taking advantage of GPS inputs, SmartRunway and SmartLanding
identify the aircraft’s 3-D position at the specific airport, and it’s
heading / track and groundspeed
• Utilizing the EGPWS runway database, SmartRunway and
SmartLanding implement a “virtual” box around runways and use
Voice Advisories and (optional) Visual Messages to provide
positional awareness
• At higher groundspeed, the advisory distance will be increased to
maximize and enhance the crew’s reaction time

11
Honeywell Proprietary
 Honeywell.com

How It Works and Other Items of Interest

• As of Q2 ’10, over 2,300 airports were
SmartRunway and SmartLanding capable
– Honeywell adds specific airports into the database at the request
of the customer
• Terrain Database is updated approximately 4 times per year

• What SmartRunway/Landing knows (the black)

– The position of the runway, permanent displaced thresholds
– Aircraft position, speed, altitude, heading

• What SmartRunway/Landing doesn’t know (the

gray)!
– Taxiways (or any non-runway surface)
– Hold short lines (or any paint)
• SmartRunway does not guarantee an “Approaching Runway” voice before
crossing the hold short mark
– Location of (temporary) displaced thresholds
– NOTAMS – temporarily shortened or closed runways

Visual Messages
• A message can be generated on the Terrain Display concurrently
with the aural callout
• The message will be displayed for 4 sweeps (appx. 16 seconds)
• An integrated solution is available to provide stroke written
messages on the Nav Display and system status (Fail, Inop,
Unavailable) on the EICAS Display (requires display upgrades)
• The new visual messages will allow the audio levels for the
SmartRunway and SmartLanding aural advisories to be further
lowered during installation to minimize the risk of conflict with
ATC/radio and pilot-to-pilot communication
