DECEMBER 2021
Topic- 8.1- Simple Chemical Reactions
8.2 - Neutralization

GRADE:6 SUB: CHEMISTRY

• Properties of matter can be classified as either physical or chemical.

• Physical properties are properties that can be measured or observed without changing the
chemical nature of the substance.
• Chemical properties are properties that lead to a change in the substance’s chemical
structure.
• There are two types of changes in matter: physical change and chemical change.
• Physical changes only change the appearance of a substance, not its chemical
composition.
• Chemical changes cause a substance to change into an entirely new substance with a
new chemical formula.
• Chemical changes are also known as chemical reactions. The components that take
part in a chemical reaction are called reactants, and the end results are called products.
➢ Types of Chemical Reactions
• Chemical reactions are of many types. Some of them are listed below.
• Decomposition reaction
• Combination reaction
• Combustion reaction
• Neutralization reaction
• Decomposition Reaction – In a decomposition reaction, compounds break down into two
or more new substances.
AB → A + B.
• Combination Reaction – In a combination reaction, two or more components are
combined together chemically to form a new substance.
• Combination and decomposition reactions are opposite of each other.
A+B AB
• Combustion Reaction – It is a reaction in which burning of a substance takes place.
• Neutralization Reaction – In these reactions, an acid and a base react with each other
and form salt and water.
For example, hydrochloric acid reacts with sodium hydroxide (base) and forms sodium
chloride (salt) and water.

Acid + Base → Salt + Water

HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H2O

.

➢ Applications of Neutralization

• This method is used in wastewater treatment in order to reduce the damage created by the
effluents.
• Neutralization is used in the manufacturing of antacid tablets.
• The neutralization reaction is used to control the pH of the soil.

➢ Reactions of metals with water

• When a metal reacts with water, a metal hydroxide and hydrogen are formed.

sodium + water ➞ sodium hydroxide + hydrogen

Na + H2O ➞ NaOH + H2

calcium + water ➞ calcium hydroxide + hydrogen

Ca + H2O ➞ Ca(OH)2 + H2

➢ Reactions of acids with metals

• Acids react with most metals and they form a salt and hydrogen gas.

metal + acid → salt + hydrogen

magnesium + hydrochloric acid → magnesium chloride + hydrogen

Mg + HCl → MgCl2 + H2
