5.0 Fastener Part Naming Scheme

The purpose of this section is to provide the GEHC standard part naming scheme for the series of flat washers defined
in this specification. The below section notes the various GEHC part numbers that shall be used and the various options
in the GEHC part number for this series of washer. Each of the washers in this series has a unique GEHC part number
that shall be called out on GEHC Bills of Materials and this specification shall be attached to each unique part number
for this series of flat washers.
The detailed information on each of the attributes described in Figure 1 is contained in the remainder of this document.

6.0 Fastener Series Definition per ISO 7089 Standard

The fastener series described in this specification are Flat Washers. The ISO Standard for flat washers, ISO 7089, shall
define ALL parts in this series. Not all sizes given in the ISO Standard are shown in Table 1. Please check MyWorkshop
to determine if a specific part has already been released, even if its dimensions are not shown. Figure 2 is a
representative drawing of a flat washer with key dimensions defined. All dimensions shown are reference dimensions
with the ISO Standard defining the washer detailed geometry. The columns in Table 1 highlighted in WHITE (non-
shaded) are the preferred washer sizes to be used in GEHC designs.
An alternate Standard for this fastener that can be used in place of ISO 7089 is DIN 125 (Type A). DIN 125 (Type A) has
slightly different detailed dimensions than what is noted below in Table 1. With the exception of washer thickness, these
differences are not significant to the overall form of the fastener and either Standard can be referenced for the series of
parts described in this specification. The discrepancy between these two Industry Standards in the nominal washer
thickness difference is noted below in Table 1 for both ISO 7089 and DIN 125 (Type A). The user should verify that this is
not a concern for their specific application.
Note that some Standards, such as DIN, may be identified as “withdrawn” but remain actively supported in the industry.
All other requirements for materials, finishes, and options defined explicitly in this Specification must be met accordingly.
State: RELEASE - Document is released and under formal Change Control. Changes are subject to the ECR/ECO Process.
See the GEHC Myworkshop System to determine the status of this document.

7.0 Material/Property Class/Finish Table

The below sections define the washer material, washer property class, and external finish. Each of the entries in Table 2
(Material, Finish, etc.) is further defined below in terms of the Industry Standards and physical properties it references in
Sections 7.1 and 7.2.
The (–) number in front of each row in this table signifies in the GE Physical Identifier, what characteristics define that
washer. This (-) should be added to the part number in accordance with GE document DOC0422574. It should always
be added to the part number as a two-digit number (ex. –02 or –11) to enable easier searching in the GE parts database.

detailed definitions and Industry Standard specifications for each unique material and property class referenced in the
above table. All materials listed in the table shall be GEHC RoHS compliant. See Section 9 of this document for
requirements on restricted substances.

7.1.1 Steel Materials, ISO 7089

Steel materials called out in the above Table 2 shall be manufactured according to the property class requirements
defined in ISO 7089 – Plain Washers, Normal Series, Product Grade A, with the exception that 140HV property class can
be used, as it is the most commercially available.
For reference, Steel, 140 HV should be an alloy steel with a minimum Vickers Hardness (HV) of 140.

7.1.2 Stainless Steel Materials, ISO 7089

Stainless steel materials called out in the above Table 2 shall be manufactured according to the property class
requirements defined in ISO 7089 – Plain Washers, Normal Series, Product Grade A with the exception that 140HV
property class can be used as it is the most commercially available.
For reference, A2 Stainless Steel 140 HV should be Austenitic stainless steel (300 Series equivalent) with a minimum
Vickers Hardness (HV) of 140.
A2-70 is preferred for all stainless steel fasteners due to lower costs. If lower magnetic permeability is desired and it is
commercially available, A4-70 can be used. However, lower magnetic permeability is not guaranteed.

7.1.3 Brass and Bronze Materials
Brass materials called out in the above Table 2 shall be manufactured according to CU2 (CuZn37), or allowable similar
materials ISO CuZn33 (C270, UNS-C27000), or ISO CuZn30 (C260, UNS-C26000). Phosphor Bronze is per UNS-C51900, or
UNS-C52000, or UNS-C51000.

7.1.4 Nylon Materials

Nylon material called out in the above Table 2 shall be Polyamide 6.6.

7.2 Detailed Definitions of External Finish

Table 2 above lists the options for the external finish of the washer. The sub-sections below list out the detailed
definitions and Industry Standard specifications for each unique external finish referenced in the above table. All
finishes listed in the table shall be GEHC RoHS compliant. See Section 9 of this document for requirements on restricted
substances.

7.2.1 Zinc Plating on Steel, ISO 4042

Zinc plating finish plus passivation called out in the above table shall be done in accordance with ISO 4042, Class A1E
WITHOUT the use of hexavalent chromium. The passivation treatment MUST NOT contain hexavalent chromium in
order to meet the RoHS requirements in Section 9.

7.2.2 Finishing of Stainless Steel, ISO 16048 or ASTM A380

State: RELEASE - Document is released and under formal Change Control. Changes are subject to the ECR/ECO Process.

Passivation is recommended but not a strict requirement when these fasteners are made of stainless steel. Passivation
is often done as part of the normal manufacturing process to clean and descale the fastener surface after forming.
Stainless steel parts shall be cleaned, descaled and/or passivated per ASTM A380 or equivalent, such as ASTM A967 or
ISO 16048.

7.2.3 Nickel Plating on Phosphor Bronze, ISO 4526 or ISO 4527

See the GEHC Myworkshop System to determine the status of this document.

Nickel plating finish on phosphor bronze may be per ISO 4526, ISO 4527, or equivalent.

8.0 Detailed Definition of GEHC Part Number
Figure 1 of this specification lists the unique physical identifier that shall be assigned to the washers defined per this
specification. This physical identifier is a combination of coded and descriptive alphanumeric characters. This section
defines each attribute of this part number and references common industry specifications to define both the coded and
descriptive characters. For information on the part naming scheme, refer to GEHC document DOC0422574.

8.1 Fastener Series Code

The fastener series code is an assigned 4-digit code that is used internally to classify different types of hardware
commonly used in GEHC designs. The purpose of this code is to define which Industry Standard is being used, for that
given part number series. For this specification, the flat washer series of fastener per ISO 7089 has been assigned code
number 2000. Refer to GEHC document DOC0422574 for more detailed information.

8.2 Washer Size

Washer size is a descriptive character that designates the nominal thread size 1 of the fastener for which the washer is
used. The dimensions of the washer are defined in ISO 7089 – Plain Washers, Normal Series, Product Grade A and the
tolerances for the washer are defined in ISO 4759-3: “Plain Washers for Bolts, Screws and Nuts-Product Grades A and C.”
The designation of thread size shall be done by utilizing the convention detailed in ISO 262, with an example shown
below. The only change to this standard convention is an M2.5 screw shall be designated as M2P5.
Ex. M6, which is a WASHER for a metric 6mm nominal diameter screw.
State: RELEASE - Document is released and under formal Change Control. Changes are subject to the ECR/ECO Process.

8.3 Material/Property Class/Finish

Refer to Section 7 for detailed information.

9.0 GEHC RoHS Requirement
