LESSON 1: SOLVING MULTI-STEP PROBLEMS INVOLVING MULTIPLICATION AND

ADDITION DECIMALS
After several weeks of answering word problems, you must have already mastered our the
steps. This week we will continue to learn more about Multiplication of decimals involving other
operations; addition and subtraction.

To start with the lesson, let us first read a short but touching story.

Ever since Kurt and Karl’s grandfather died, they have been helping their father in
their rice field to provide for the family. Cultivating the land for the upcoming planting
season. Each day, Kurt worked 4.5 hours while Karl worked 4.3 hours. Find the total
number of hours the two boys worked together in 4 days.

Before we proceed with the steps, answer the following questions first.

1. What kind of children were Kurt and Karl?

2. The problem asks you to look for

3. The given facts in the problem are

4. The hidden questions are

5. The number sentence is

As usual, to solve the problem, you should read and understand the problem carefully. Then,
identify what is being asked. Next, write down what is given.

IDENTIFY

Asked:
a. The total number of hours Kurt and Karl worked together.

Given:

Boy No. of Hours Worked Days Worked

each day
Kurt 4.6 4
Karl 4.3 4

Hidden Questions:

- How many hours did Kurt work in total?

- How many hours did Karl work in total?

STRATEGIZE
1. Strategize
- To find the total number of hours the 2 boys worked in 4 days, first we need to find how
many hours did each boy work.
- Then, we will add the number of hours of each boy to find how many hours did both of the
boys work.

SET-UP

2. Set-up – What is the number sentence in the problem?

+ (Kurt’s hours worked × Number of days)

+ (Karl’s hours worked × Number of days)
= Total number of hours

SOLVE

3. Solve: To find the answer, let us solve the number sentence one by one.

+ (Kurt’s hours worked × Number of days)

+ (Karl’s hours worked × Number of days)
= Total number of hours

+ (4.6 hours × 4 days)

+ (4.3 hours × 4 days) or (4.6 hours × 4 days) + (4.3 hours x 4 days)
= Total number of hours

First, let’s find out how many hours Kurt has worked then Karl.

Kurt = 4.6 Karl = 4.3

× 4 × 4
18.4 17.2

Then, add the number of hours each boy worked to get the total number.

18.4
+¿ 17.2
35.6 hours

Therefore, Kurt and Karl worked a total of 35.6 hours in 4 days helping their father.

SOLVE THIS
Mrs. Dalisay purchased school supplies for her sari-sari store. She bought 6 boxes of
crayons at ₱18.50 per box, 10 packs of colored paper at ₱5.50 per pack, and 20 pieces
of ruler at ₱6.50 each. How much did she pay for all the items?

Show all of the steps as discussed. No steps, no points.

LESSON 2: SOLVING MULTI-STEP PROBLEMS INVOLVING MULTIPLICATION

AND SUBTRACTION OF DECIMALS

Ms. Clayton went to the market to buy ube as she needs it because of her ube leche
flan business. Initially, a kilo of Ube is sold at ₱55.00 but she was able to buy 11
kilos of ube for only ₱50.50 per kilo after asking for so much discount. If she had a
Before we proceed with the steps, let us try to guess what could be needed to solve
the problem.

1. What kind of person is Ms. Clayton?

2. The problem asks you to look for

3. The given facts in the problem are

4. The hidden questions are

5. The number sentence is

To solve the problem let us begin with reading and understanding the problem carefully.
Then, identify what is being asked. Next, write down what is given.

IDENTIFY

Asked:
a. Ms. Clayton’s change after paying with her ₱1 000.00 bill

Given:

Item Price Amount

Ube ₱50.50 per kilo 11 kilos

Ms. Clayton’s money: ₱1 000.00

Hidden Questions:

How much did Ms. Clayton pay for the ube?

STRATEGIZE
5. Strategize
- To find how much change Ms. Clayton will receive, first we need to find the total price for
the ube by multiplying its price to how many kilos she bought.
- Then, we will subtract the total price of the mangoes from her ₱1 000.00 bill.

SET-UP

Set-up – What is the number sentence in the problem?

₱1 000.00
- (Price of Ube × Number of Kilos)
= Ms. Clayton’s change

or ₱1 000.00 – (Price of Ube × Number of Kilos) = Ms. Clayton’s change

SOLVE

Solve: To find the answer, let us solve the number sentence using the order of
operations, PMDAS.

₱1 000.00 – (Price of Ube × Number of Kilos) = Ms. Clayton’s change

= ₱1 000.00 – (₱50.50 × 11 kilos)

= ₱1 000.00 – ₱555.50

= ₱ 444.50

₱1 000.00
−¿ ₱ 555.50

Therefore, Ms. Clayton will receive a change of ₱ 444.50 after paying with her ₱ 1 000.00 bill

ON YOUR OWN
Solve the following multi-step word problem. Show your steps. No
steps, no points. Use the attached blank pieces of paper for your answer.

1. Jimmy bought 4 liters of yellow paint and 2 liters of blue paint. If the yellow paint is
₱175.50 a liter and the blue paint is P195.00 a liter, how much dud Jimmy spend on
buying paint?

2. Mother bought 3.2 meters of curtain material at P65.00 per meter and 6.3 meters of
floor mat at P80.00 per meter. How much did she pay?

3. Ben helps his father feed the chicken in their poultry farm. For the daily feeding ratio,
he gives 10.75 kilograms of laying mash and 15.5 kilograms of growing mash to the
broilers and layers. How many kilograms does he use in one week?

4. Mother bought 10.5 kilograms of fruits, 4.5 kilograms of fish, 1.70 kilograms of
vegetables. How many kilograms of food did she buy?

5. Give the total weight of 5.5 kilogram of mangoes, 4.75 kilograms of oranges, 6.7
kilograms of pomelos, and 6.6 kilograms of bananas.

6. A sack of rice weighed 48.5 (kgs) kilograms. What was the total weight of 6 sacks if
they all have the same weight?
