Beti Bachao Why in news?


Beti Padao • BBBP will now be extended across the country.
(BBBP), • The Parliamentary Committee on Empowerment of Women has noted in its report that the
2015 Government spent 80% of the funds under the BBBP scheme on media campaigns.

BBBP
• MWCD (Ministry of Women & Child Development) + MHFW (Ministry of Health & Family
Welfare) + MoE (Ministry of Education)
• Aim: gender equality + educating girls.

• 2016: sakshi Malik (wrestler) – won bronze medal in Rio Olympic (summer): brand
ambassador of BBBP
• Central Sector Scheme (100% financial assistance from the Centre)

Significance:
• Decline in the Child Sex Ratio (CSR) since 1961: from 945 in 1991 to 918 in 2011
• Easy availability of diagnostic tools = Sex Selective = declining sex ratio

Child Sex Ratio:


• Number of girls per 1000 of boys
• between 0-6 years

Need for scheme:


• It aims at making girls independent, both monetarily and socially.
• To generate awareness towards women issues.
• To improve the efficiency of delivery of welfare services meant for women.
• The government is continually stressing on quality education for girls and encouraging parents
to send their girl child to school.
• There is a strong emphasis on mindset change through training, sensitization, awareness etc.

Outcomes of the scheme:


• M H FW rep o rt: sex rat io at b irth is sh owing p romisin g t rend s o f im provement and has
im p ro v ed b y 1 6 p oin ts fro m 9 18 (2 014 -15) t o 9 3 4 (2 019 -2 0).
• H ea lt h p ercen tage o f f irst t rim ester Antenatal Ca re (ANC ) h as sh own an im p roving
t ren d f rom 6 1% in 2 0 14-15 t o 7 1% in 2 019 -20.
• Th e ed u catio n gro ss enrolment ra tio o f girls in t h e sch ools at t he secondary level has
a lso im p roved f rom 7 7 .45 p er cent (2 0 14-15) t o 8 1.32 p er cent (2 018 -19-provisional
f igu res).
• The number of women police officers has also increased from 6% to 8.5%.

Conclusion: The BBBP initiative have started giving fruit at small level. The success of this
scheme will add to the economic growth of the country as India cannot afford to have a large part
of its population remain neglected.
