HW#5 (Due date: Wednesday 21/12/2022) Dr. Ghassan Almasabha

Problem 6.3c: The coordinates of the following constant strain triangular (CST) element are in
units of inches. Let E = 10 x 106 psi, v = 0.25, and thickness t =1in. Given the nodal
displacements of u1 = 0.0 in., v1 = 0.0025 in., u2 = 0.0012 in., v2 = 0.0 in., u3 = 0.0 in., and v3 =
0.0025 in. Answer points 1 to 4.

A) Assume plane stress conditions for points 1 and 2.

1. Evaluate the stiffness matrix for the CST element.

2. Determine the element stresses σx, σy, τxy, σ1, σ2, and the
principal angle θp.

B) Assume plane strain conditions for points 3 and 4.

3. Evaluate the stiffness matrix for the CST element.

4. Determine the element stresses σx, σy, τxy, σ1, σ2, and the principal angle θp.
