2. What is evapotranspiration ?
5. Write down an equation for estimation of the depth of water stored in the root zone and explain all terms
involved
7. What is the Sodium Absorption Ratio S.A.R. as applied to irrigation water quality
PART B (3X4)
8. (a) With aid of sketch explain different zones of soil as applied in irrigation
OR
(b) With aid of sketch define the following terms
(i) Field capacity
(i) Available moisture to the plant
(ii) Permanent wilting point
OR
(b) What is the objective of drainage system in an irrigated field?
10 (a) What are the effects of water logging in a farm field?
OR
(b) Mention any four points to be observed when designing a drainage system
PART C (2x12=24)
11 (a) The Moisture content at Field Capacity of a clay Loam Soil is 28% by weight while that at permanent
Wilting point is 14% by weight. Root zone depth Is 1 m and the Bulk Density Is 1.02 g/cm 3 . Gross
depth of Irrigation required If the Irrigation Efficiency Is 0.7.
OR
(b) The Moisture content at Field Capacity of clay Loam Soil is 28% by weight while that at permanent
wilting point is 14% by weight. Root zone depth Is 1 m and the Bulk Density Is 1.02 g/cm 3 . Calculate
the net depth of Irrigation required If the Irrigation Efficiency Is 0.7.
12 (a) Write down the expression for estimating the design capacity Q of the irrigation scheme and define
all terms involved
OR
(b) (i) Define the term ‘application efficiency’ as applied in irrigation engineering
(ii) 45 m3 of water was pumped into a farm distribution system. 38 m 3 of water is delivered to a
turn out (at head ditch) which is 2 km from the well. Compute the Conveyance Efficiency.
