Activity 1.
As future accountants, why do you need to study Pop Culture? Explore
the connections between accounting and pop culture.

Other people called me an idealistic person for aspiring to achieve a

harmonious, peaceful, and united society. They say that my ideas were very hard to
achieve because the reality is that every sector of our society - may it be in the
academic setting, political affairs, religious activities, etc. - is already divided by
different socioeconomic factors like social status, gender identity, and level of
educational attainment. And I can't help but sadly agree. It is already stagnant and
deeply rooted in the system and structure of our society. And as a student studying
Accountancy, where I was able to see, experience, and learn about different life,
monetary, unethical, and economic issues, I can't help but to still dream of the day
where we can finally achieve equity and unity as a community, and together move
forward towards progress. I aspire to be an accountant who can make a change and
create an impact on society. I want to be an accountant who is socially, economically,
and politically aware. I want to be an accountant who can distinguish structural
problems from personal problems and cure injustices in our social system - even just a
little. I want to be an accountant whose standards transcend efficiency, transparency,
integrity, and rationality. An accountant that would include justice and equity in his
every endeavor. And I think I just found the missing brick that will complete the
cornerstone of this vision - POP CULTURE.

As a socioeconomic society, these issues would never be truly resolved without

equity and fairness - without a common ground that will bind us. Delving deeper into
this issue from an accountant's perspective, if the economic wealth and opportunities
are only concentrated in a few areas, only people on top of the hierarchy would
forever dominate the world. And in my own opinion, the only solution to this is to
restructure the social structure that has been present for a long time. Other people may
see the cause of the never-ending destitution problem as something behavioral, but I
believe it is structural. Let us use a more profound lens and see that poverty is caused
not by defects in the character or training of the poor but by the injustice of our social
system/structure. We must remember that economics is more than an exchange of
goods; it is also an exercise of power. And if unjust people continue to exercise an
unfair power-play for personal gains, then deprivation will be forever stagnant. And
that is why we need pop culture.

We can use the different concepts of pop culture as a lens to view the world on its
bigger, better, and happier side. Pop culture will serve as a force to enable
professionals like Accountants to remove the wall separating us. Pop culture will be
our universal language - a language anyone can speak - that manages its seemingly
trivial glory to make us dream and smile to connect us across racial, political, and
social divides. It is our hope to once again bring the fabric of humanity as one. So, the
connection between pop culture and accounting? Simple, pop culture helps us to
BALANCE life: to DEBIT unity amidst diversity and CREDIT fractionalization and
negativity - understanding life and accounting through the lens of POP CULTURE.
