- Competition analysis (who are the competitors in the industry? Who sells same or similar
products/ service? Who are most significant competitors to your business? How those businesses affect
your business.

- Competitive mapping (positioning) base on competition analysis show competitive mapping and
where you would position your business.

- Industry analysis (porter’s five force)

- Competitive strategy which competitive strategy you would use. Can focus on long run ( porters’
generic strategy/ cost leadership or differentiation focus..

Use relevant literature to support your argument

- this is about sellers - other people providing similar or related services or products.

- analysis of competition and competitive dynamics within the industry- (evidence of usage of
relevant academic tools)

- competitors’ analysis and likely competitors’ actions

- competitive strategy – informed by literature and academic tools.

- evidence of appropriate data collection, analysis, and usage.

• One example of a relevant theory at this stage is Porters 5 Forces (provides structure and
intellectual rigour)

However! Like any theory, porter has flaws and so you need to justify why the theory you are
using is the best for your application.

For example, (from strat man) Porters thinking has evolved, and there has been significant
critique of his model. Therefore is it the best for you or should you find something else?
