This document describes a mechanical engineering lab experiment on adjusting valve clearance in an internal combustion (IC) engine. It lists 10 student group members and their ID numbers. The objective of the experiment was to demonstrate how to adjust the inlet and outlet valves to the manufacturer's specification of 3mm clearance. Initial measurements showed the valves were at 5mm and 4mm clearance. After adjusting the valves using the proper tools and procedures, the final measurements were both at the specified 3mm clearance. The conclusion is that correctly adjusting valve clearance is important for engine efficiency and lifetime.

The objective of carrying this lab experiment is to demonstrate the
procedures and techniques necessary to adjust both the inlet and outlet valve clearance in IC engine to the optimum level. This optimum level is usually determined by the manufacturers. So, most of the time the procedure is carried out with the objective of adjusting the valve clearance to the manufacturer specification. By doing so we can make sure that the engine efficiency remains at its optimum level and is operating its normal function properly. Failing to do so will probably lead to valves being non-functional causing the engine to become “unable” to start even when every other part of the engine is in perfect condition. Results At the beginning of the experiment the valve clearance we read using the valve clearance gauge at the inlet and outlet valve were 5mm and 4mm respectively. We were instructed by our teacher to adjust the clearance for both valves to 3mm. After performing the necessary steps stated in the procedures section, using the necessary tools we were able to adjust both the valves to 3mm. Conclusion & Discussion After having observe the procedure and taking part in the process, we can conclude that adjusting valve clearance is an important and essential part in maintaining the engine efficiency and lifetime. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary that we carefully follow the instruction and carryout the procedure as stated per laboratory manual or instructor. Failing to do so will cause the engine not only to fail but also render it ineffective through time.
