CAMLESS ENGINES.
Introduction
The new energy technology for automotive technology are the CAMLESS engine , in which the
engine does not have camshaft to lift the both intake and exhaust valve .
CAMS
•Control the breathing channels (valves)of an IC engine
•Connected to camshaft which is operated by crankshaft
•Cams push open valves at proper time and guide their closure
•But they are flexible expect V-TEC and VVT-I
•Eningeers could not vary time, lift and duration of valve opening infinitely.
Camsless Engines
•Eliminated mechanical linkages
•Could provide infinite variation of valve parameters
•It can make engines clean , efficient and responsive.
Working of Conventional Engines
•The crankshaft turns camshaft
which operates vlaves by
mechanism
•Spring brings back valve to
initial position
•Timing of engine valves
depends on shape of cams
Conventional Engine valves
•Engineers must design cams
in the development stages
•This design compromises b/n
engine power and fuel
efficiency
•Considering this compromise
automobile companies
brought variable valve timing
mechanism
•But it’s effect were limited.
CAMLESS ENGINES overview
Main sensors –
Engine load sensors Engine gas sensors
Valve position sensor Engine speed sensors

Sensors sense parameters and send signals ECU

ECU contains microprocessors with associated software
This ECU controls the actuator to work according to requirements
Actuators
•It is an electro hydraulic CAMLESS valve train
•Uses elastic property of compressed
hydraulic fluid which acts like a liquid spring ,
accelerates and decelerates the valves

Hydraulicendulum
•Involves conversion of PE to KE and back to
PE with minimum energy loss
•During acceleration of valves PE is converted
toKE
•During Deceleration of valves Energy of
moving valve returned to fluid
Detailed view of Hydraulic pendulum
Operation of Hydraulic pendulum
Lift timing and duration of valve opening is varied by controlling solenoid valves
This is done by ECU when signals are sent from the sensors
Modifier Rod and it’s
operation
Used to impart
1. Unequal lift to the paired valves
2. Zero motion to any valves.

Operation
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES

1. Enables the development of higher torque 1. High cost

throughout the entire rev range which is to
improve fuel economy 2. Increased power consumption

2. Cylinder deactivation can be achieved 3. Air gap between the solenoids may
during the idling phase demand a higher magnitude of current
during certain periods
3. Exhaust gas recirculation is improved
4. The control strategy for valves seating
4. Reduces friction losses velocity needs to be modified
5. Reduces inertia of moving parts

Conclusion
Even though some disadvantages are present , we can expect
electrohydraulic and electromechanical valves to replace the
conventional camshaft technology
