" A CASE STUDY ON REVAMPING

COMFORT ROOM SYSTEM IN
PARAÑAQUE NATIONAL HIGH
SCHOOL MAIN - SENIOR HIGH
SCHOOL"

1. Executive Summary

The comfort room is the most important part of the school (siteadmin, 2021). thus, this
study "Attempts to" resolve the problems caused by the lack of toilets, cleaning materials, and
health implications of poor sanitation of school comfort rooms in PNHS- MAIN SHS.

Revamping the comfort room in PNHS-MAIN aims to improve the overall cleanliness and
functionality of the facility. The project will involve the following key components:

● Repair and maintenance of existing fixtures, including sinks, toilets, and hand dryers.

● Installation of new, high-quality fixtures, such as waterless urinals and touchless faucets,
to reduce water usage and increase hygiene.

● Replacement of flooring and wall tiles with more durable and easy-to-clean materials.
● Addition of additional hand washing stations to reduce wait times and improve
accessibility.

● Implementation of a new cleaning and maintenance schedule to ensure the comfort

room is kept clean and well-maintained on a daily basis.

There are several reasons why revamping the comfort room in a school may be a good idea:
1. Health and hygiene: Poorly maintained or outdated comfort rooms can be breeding
grounds for germs and bacteria, which can lead to illness among students and staff.
Updating the comfort room with modern fixtures, like hands-free faucets and flush
valves, can help reduce the spread of illness and improve overall hygiene.
2. Accessibility: Revamping the comfort room can also make it more accessible for
students, staff, and students with disabilities.
3. Student comfort: Comfort rooms that are in poor condition can be unpleasant and
uncomfortable for students to use. Updating the facilities can make them more
welcoming and comfortable, which can improve the overall student experience.
4. School image: A modern and well-maintained comfort room can contribute to a positive
image for the school. This can be particularly important for schools that rely on tuition or
donations from parents and community members.

In conclusion, the goal of this study is to promote hygienic and clean restroom use
among all students. Every student must understand the need of keeping themselves clean, and
doing so will help the children maintain cleanliness in all restrooms. This serves as the basis to
prevent unhygienic comfort rooms by bringing fresh and well-sanitized comfort rooms and
significantly ensuring cleanliness and raising issues about a lack of materials in the school
comfort rooms.

Revamping the comfort room in PNHS-MAIN can improve health and hygiene, increase
accessibility, and enhance student comfort. as well as, improve the school's image.

1.1 INTRODUCTION

This paperwork is part of 12-HUMSS Socrates Project Advocacy, to Revamp the

Comfort Rooms System in PNHS MAIN SHS. Comfort Rooms is a facility that offers a
supportive therapeutic setting. Comfort rooms are designed to help reduce tension and assist
the child with developing personal coping skills so that they can maintain control in triggering
situations. The comfort should also be a safe haven to develop skills and techniques to manage
emotions and behavior " Social Emotional - Learning" (2022)

According to an international survey by Domestos, Because the restrooms at school are

dirty or broken, about 1 in 5 children "hold it in" and experience physical discomfort or difficulties
concentrating as a result "Unilever" (2021).

Lack of cleaning materials, water sanitation, and toilet facilities will cause illness in the
students and visual pollution every time the students visualize the comfort room "Study moose"
(2018). Given that just 15% of students express concern about the condition of their school
restrooms " The school toilet report" (2021)

In Southeast Asia, including the Philippines, many children suffer from a high burden of
preventable diseases with inadequate sanitation, limited access to water and lack of personal
hygiene. These diseases, such as diarrhea, respiratory infections, and soil-transmitted helminth
(STH) infections, negatively affect children’s overall enhancement through their adverse impact
on school presence, educational achievement, and quality of life. (Marvin. M., 2022) Maintaining
the cleanliness of comfort room is a positive effect that would help the school comfort rooms to
look decent and comfortable to everyone who wants to use the toilet ( Dizon et al., 2020)

This study aims for every student to be clean and sanitized when they use comfort
rooms. This study aims in helping students in the school to have liquid soaps and provided
hygiene kits in every comfort room. The comfort room is the most important part of the school,
thus this study will try to resolve the problems caused by the lack of toilets, cleaning materials,
and lack of maintenance of comfort rooms in PNHS- MAIN SHS.

1.2 ANALYSIS

The study was conducted on a cluster of sections in the Marquez Building consisting of
Rousseau, Rumi, Sappho, Socrates, and Voltaire. Four of these sections are situated on the top
floor of the Marquez Building, while section Rousseau is located on the third floor. The students
of these sections were the respondents of this study.

The total population of the cluster was 264 students. A sample size of 157 students was
derived using Slovin’s Formula, using a margin of error of 5%. A self-selected sampling method
was used to acquire the number of students needed

A survey questionnaire was chosen from related studies on the internet. The
questionnaire was then implemented in Google Forms and distributed through Messenger. The
data collection spanned over three days until it reached the sample size needed.

By the use of the data collection method, here are the results of the survey.

1.3 ALTERNATIVES AND DECISION CRITERIA

Alternatives:

● Increase supervision and monitoring of restrooms by school staff and faculty members.
● Provide more privacy options in the bathroom (i.e., stalls with doors, and curtains)
● Establish a clear policy about acceptable behavior in the restroom including expectations
for respectful language, activities, etc. as well as consequences for non-compliance.
● Cleaning Frequency: Establish a regular schedule for cleaning and maintenance of
school restrooms such as daily or weekly depending on the school's needs to maintain a
healthy environment.
● Sanitation Supplies: Ensure that adequate supplies are available in each restroom
including soap, paper towels, toilet paper, and hand sanitizers.
● Ventilation System: Install an effective ventilation system (air filtration or purification
system) in restrooms to reduce odor and improve air quality control.
● Lighting System: Install proper lighting fixtures that provide enough light within each
restroom so it is easy to spot any potential issues quickly and easily.
● Security Measures: Implement security measures such as locks or cameras outside or
the entryway of the restroom to discourage vandalism and theft.
● Redesign the layout of the restroom to increase privacy and decrease crowding.
● Installation of hand sanitizer dispensers in each stall and at all sinks.
● Providing waterless hand sanitizers to improve student hand-cleaning behavior,
particularly in schools with limited water access.
● Utilization of touchless soap dispensers which are more hygienic than traditional pumps,
eliminating cross-contamination from multiple users' hands touching the same pump
handle or bar soap dish/container.
● Provide more signboards and reminders - Provide education on proper hygiene
practices and proper use of cleaning materials provided for students.
● Implementing water tanks that are connected to a large centralized source of water,
such as a river or reservoir. Also, incorporate rainwater harvesting systems in school for
future use and to provide and ensure water availability for restrooms year-round.

30
Decision Criteria:

● Cost of Implementation - What is the cost associated with each alternative in terms of
labor, materials, and installation?
● Impact - What are the expected impacts on student and staff health, safety, and well-
being?
● Students' Morale - Will everyone follow or listen to the plan provided/implemented?
● Usability - Will any of these alternatives be difficult or uncomfortable for students to
use?
● User Experience / Impact on Students - Will students feel comfortable using these
restroom facilities after they have been upgraded or modified according to our plans? It
should have a positive impact on student's health and well-being.
● Durability & Maintenance Need - What is the expected lifespan of any proposed
solution? The solution should be durable enough to withstand regular usage without
frequent maintenance or repair, which can lead to increased overall costs if not
efficiently managed.
● Health and Safety Benefits - How effective would each solution be at improving
hygiene, and reducing germs or bacteria in school restrooms?
● Availability of Resources - The chosen solution should take into account any existing
resources or infrastructure that can be utilized to reduce cost or improve the efficiency of
Implementation.
● Sustainability - The chosen solution should be sustainable and have minimal
environmental impacts, such as renewable sources or eco-friendly materials.
● Effectiveness - The effectiveness of the proposed solution should be evaluated based
on the feedback from teachers, administrators, parents, and students.

31
1.4 RECOMMENDATIONS AND IMPLEMENTATION PLAN

Based on the previous problems revealed and the criteria made, here are the
recommended solutions to be taken to increase the overall satisfaction of students regarding the
system of comfort rooms in PNHS-MAIN SHS.

"Student's Comfort Room Satisfaction in terms of Cleanliness"

• The restroom must have a clean water supply

• Supply of cleaning materials in the restroom
• Toilet flusher in every cubicle
• Presence of trash container in the restroom
• Cleanliness of the entire restroom

Based on the survey we conducted, data result showed that the majority of the students
are unsatisfied in terms of Cleanliness of the entire comfort rooms.

According to Duijster, D. (2022), Sustainable access to Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene

(WASH) services in schools is essential to promote health and positive educational outcomes
for children. In Southeast Asia, including the Philippines, many children suffer from a high
burden of preventable diseases with inadequate sanitation, limited access to water, and lack of
personal hygiene as a common causes. These diseases, such as diarrhea, respiratory
infections, and soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections, negatively affect children’s overall
development through their adverse impact on school attendance, educational achievement, and
quality of life. Children spend a substantial amount of time at school where they benefit from a
safe and healthy learning environment with adequate WASH facilities and routine activities
fostering positive hygiene habits. However, many schools are facing challenges with providing
and maintaining even basic service levels as defined in the Sustainable Development Goals
(SDGs). As a result, many toilets remain unusable, are not kept clean, and/or basic
requirements for pupil handwashing are not met.

32
"Student's Comfort room Satisfaction In terms of Fragrance "

• Odor inside the restroom

• Restroom's atmosphere
• Scented soap in every cubicle of the restroom

The school should also establish a regular maintenance schedule for restocking the
scented soap in the restroom cubicles. Ensuring that the soap is restocked regularly will help
ensure that users have access to it and can use it.

According to a study conducted by Smith (2019), a lack of scented soap in each cubicle
in the restroom can lead to a decrease in overall cleanliness. To ensure that restrooms remain
hygienic, Smith recommends that each cubicle should be stocked with scented soap.

Utilizing scented soaps can also help to mask any unpleasant odors that may be present
in the restroom.

"Student's Comfort room Satisfaction In terms of Overall Space "

• The interior design of each cubicle of the restroom

• Sufficient space of the restroom
• The overall appearance of the restroom

Based on the survey we conducted, the data result showed that the majority of the
student is unsatisfied in terms of overall appearance of comfort rooms.

According to Jenifer K McGuire et al. (2022), Dirty restrooms can cause students to be
absent from school with transmitted diarrhoeal diseases. Students need to understand the
importance of hand hygiene, which can be difficult to carry out if the sinks they have access to
aren’t clean and lack paper towels. Filthy school restrooms can cause students to miss days at
school outside of being sick as well.

Schools need clean toilets to promote cleanliness to students and further teach them the
importance of washing their hands. The hygiene habits that children learn in school can be
carried with them as they grow up.

Recommendations are made for students to enhance the tangible quality construct by
considering cleanliness as a customer service quality dimension, and to assess customers'
opinions on cleanliness by gender and education.

Another found neutral votes from the respondents in terms of the sufficiency of spaces in
restrooms. Students give less attention in terms of space in the restrooms.

33
The study, which was published in SMCC INTERDISCIPLINARY JOURNAL 1 (1), 1-1,
(2020), shows the significance of restroom space because other things that must be kept in the
facilities greatly rely on it. Additionally, each cubicle needs to have a precise spot where kits or
other supplies can be placed.

The collected data from the survey gives a result of “important” on a scale of 4 from the
liker scale Importance.

This shows that all of the presented potential solutions are important in terms of the
Importance of having an adequate comfort room.

“Importance of Comfort Room Accessibility”

*Comfort rooms must be easily located by the students, teachers, visitors, and other school
staff.

In this study, the majority of respondents rated the location of the restroom, which had to
be simple for everyone to find, as IMPORTANT.

The accessibility of restrooms, particularly for LGBTQ+ persons, and how occasionally
they are locked or unavailable were some of the subjects explored in the study that was
published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health 18 (18),
9652, (2021).

“Importance of the Quality, Equipment, and Functionality of the Comfort Room”

* School comfort rooms have to be in good condition and have access to water facilities
* Comfort rooms must be equipped with sanitation kits like soaps, hand sanitizers, toilet paper,
alcohols, and trash cans.
* The school must provide enough cleaning materials in every comfort room's facilities.
* Installation of lightning fixtures that provide enough lights and replacement of broken bulbs
within each restroom so it is easy to spot any potential issues.
* School comfort rooms must have proper ventilation in each cubicle to lessen their unpleasant
smells.
* The school must provide enough cleaning materials in every comfort room facility

Water is one of the most important for public health, whether it is used for drinking,
domestic use, food production, or recreational purposes. Improved water supply and sanitation,
and better management of water resources, can boost countries' economic growth and can
contribute greatly to poverty reduction.

34
According to the study of Tortajada (2018)As the Millennium Development Goals did
earlier, the Sustainable Development Goals have mobilized the international community into
what can be the most important, although the most challenging, development goals of the 21st
century.

Maintaining the security of the students helping materials and comfort room supplies the
students to maintain their security. If the school comfort rooms are not in good condition, then
users felt uncomfortable and not secured. Thus, the comfort room should be in good order and
safe to use. According to Andrew LaRowe, & Mike Raible (April 2018), Several recent studies
focusing on the use of restrooms in public schools reveal that many children are unwilling to use
them.

The school must provide enough cleaning materials in every comfort room facility. The
cleanliness of the comfort room assists students in maintaining its cleanliness; however, some
disobedient students did not adhere to the instructions for sanitizing the restroom.

To solve this issue the researchers recommended that the school should provide
sufficient cleaning materials in their restrooms to maintain hygiene and ensure the health and
safety of students.

The experts suggested providing cleaning materials at least twice a day to clean the
restrooms. To avoid discomfort in restrooms, it is essential to comprehend and use cleaning
materials at all times. (Magpusao et al., 2020)

"Providing adequate cleaning materials in the restroom is essential to maintain a high

standard of hygiene and to prevent the spread of germs and bacteria" (Tunney, 2020).

Furthermore, “good hygiene practices, such as providing adequate cleaning materials

and ensuring that restrooms are properly cleaned and sanitized, are essential to preventing the
spread of infectious diseases” (McGee et al., 2020).

Cleaning materials help keep the restrooms clean, healthy, and safe for students and
staff. Therefore, Cleaning materials are an essential part of maintaining a healthy and safe
learning environment in schools.

35
“Importance of Supervising the Comfort Rooms”

* There must be school staff that will supervise the comfort rooms to ensure their proper
condition and maintain cleanliness of comfort rooms.
* The school administrators must post reminders and guidelines inside the comfort rooms about
the proper ways to maintain cleanliness of the comfort rooms. o

The School Administrators must post reminders and guidelines inside the comfort rooms
about the proper ways how to maintain the cleanliness of the comfort rooms. Management
Study Guide (2022), An individual must act in a socially responsible way. A professional is
required to behave in a certain way. To be respected by others, one must be responsible and
mature enough. Like when using the restroom to prevent the spread of germs and illnesses,
toilets must be kept clean and hygienic.

We have to consider the capacity of the school and its administration to comply and
provide the given recommendations.
● Coordinate with the school administration regarding the findings of this study.
● As further planning is ongoing, cooperate with the school administration to maximize the
functionality of existing staff, facilities, and equipment. (e.g., Rotational cleaning time,
assessing the functionality of faucets and flush, and proper use of equipment) Also,
make use of this study as a basis for advocacy to take care of the existing comfort
rooms.
● Make a list of needed materials, quality-control checks, and supplements in the comfort
rooms, such as the hand-wash soap, functionality of the faucets, and flush, the windows
for air ventilation, and the amount of staff.
● From the list, arrange it in ascending order, with the first that needs urgent change.
● Conform with the school administration the list of the needed supplements that will
improve the comfort rooms of the school.
● With the approval and supporting source of funds, inquire with potential suppliers or
manufacturers of the product, such as toiletries and equipment.
● Refer to the list, then proceed to accomplish everything within the list.

With cooperation and coordination, massive changes can occur, and along with these
changes is a better tomorrow ahead for our future generation of students.

36
1.5 CONCLUSION

To summarize everything stated in this paper, this study is to promote hygienic and
clean restroom use among all students. Every student must understand the need of keeping
themselves clean. And doing so will help the children maintain cleanliness in all restrooms. This
serves as a basis to prevent unhygienic comfort rooms by bringing fresh and well-sanitized
comfort rooms, significantly ensuring cleanliness and raising issues about a lack of materials in
the school comfort rooms.

Comfort rooms offer a therapeutic setting where people can apply self-help methods to
control their behavior and emotional state. It is a location built specifically, to aid in calming a
person when that person feels stressed or overwhelmed. All students are encouraged to utilize
a clean, secure restroom as a result of this hygiene study. Cleanliness was the primary
consideration for students' toilet use on campus. The visual experience of the overall
cleanliness of toilets had the most significant impact when students used toilets. Since schools
are responsible for educating future generations, sanitary and safety issue is also important
matters. Enhancing and revising the school's current policy or method regarding comfort rooms
and distributing them equally and accordingly to every gender is also an important part.
