ORGANIC COMPOUND: PROTEIN

Protein - are large, complex molecules that play many critical roles in the body.
- most abundant organic compounds in living organism
- made up of thousands of smaller unit called amino acid.

Amino acid - building block of proteins.

- Composed of hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and sometimes sulfur.
- Is made up of amino group, carboxylic group and the R group (hydrocarbon), which is the
side chain.
- are linked to one another by peptide bond, formed between the amino group of one amino
acid and the carboxyl group of the next.
- There are 20 amino acids which are important in growth and maintenance of the bodies
activities.

Peptide or polypeptide - is a chain of amino acids linked by peptide bonds.

Essential amino acid - an amino acid that cannot be synthesized by the body.
Non-essential amino acid - an amino acid that can be produced by our body.

Food contains protein: meat, fish, beans, nuts, milk products, flour, and certain vegetables.

List of some important protein present in the body.

1. Structural Protein - support and protection of cell

2. Enzymatic Protein - catalysis of specific reaction
3. Transport Protein - transport substance between cell or across cell
4. Regulatory Protein - coordination and control of physiological processes
5. Defense Protein - defense against foreign matters in the body
6. Contractile Protein – movement
7. Storage Protein - storage of nutrients

The 20 essential amino acid: alanine, arginine, asparagine, aspartic acid, cysteine, glutamic acid,
glutamine, glycine, histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, proline,
serine, threonine, tryptophan, tyrosine, and valine.
