GUIDELINES FOR THE ESSAY

QUESTION:
To write the essay(Critique ) the student should determine the following;

● Description of the play/Production-the name/title of the production,production

company, the playwright, director, characters(main and minor) , date and time the play
was viewed, Production team(For example stage management, lighting costume etc.)
● Summary of the production-describe the story storyline/plot-how the play started?
What problem emerges? To what event it leads to(climax) How was it resolved? Type of
play
● Impact of the play/production-how the play made you feel? Describe the behaviour of
the audience, how the story is told? Does the writer line up the incidents as they happen?
What are the techniques used? (flashback, monologue, etc.) Is the production
relevant/link to our current society? How is it representing our Jamaican culture and
history?
● Analysis of the Production-how have the costumes, setting, lighting sound(Technical
elements) either strengthen or negatively affect the production, how has the stage
management impacted the gratification of the production? Comment on the strength and
weaknesses of the performance(Give reasons for your response)
● Evaluation of the production-what have you learned? Briefly give your opinion on five
important elements-acting, plot, directing design, design and stagecraft
