INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

As one of the most important crops in the Philippines, tomatoes are also one of the

most lucrative crops and are widely grown all over the world. Furthermore, even though

tomatoes are one of the most profitable crops in the Philippines, there are also pros and cons

of raising them specifically the production faces different pest problems.

From this time forward, farmers are suffering from pests eating their tomato crops.

With respect to that farmers have also been dependent on chemicals to control the growth of

such pests affecting their crops. On the other hand, chemical pesticides have a negative

impact on crops, it increases land and groundwater pollution, and they can cause a long-term

effect on soil fertility. Farmers may have been accustomed to using chemical pesticides due

to their low-cost expense, but organic pesticides are less toxic than their synthetic

counterparts.

The use of insecticides to manage insect pests has increased among rice growers

throughout the years. In the field, farmers have always perceived pests as their common

enemy harmful for the growth of their crops. With respect to that, pesticides are where they

turn to whenever the need arises as they are substances or a type of mixture, either chemical

or organic, that eradicate pests or at least lessen their damage to the plants.

The constant practice of consuming pesticides resulted in the researchers coming up

with a solution of using alternative materials to produce an organic pesticide. In accordance

with the results of our study, baking powder, water, and wood vinegar have properties

that make them important and necessary ingredients to produce the product.
Baking soda is a cost-effective pesticide that can be used for tomatoes. In this way,

tomatoes can be treated and managed in a similar way using fungicides and by taking

appropriate preventative measures. (Back Garden 2019) Sodium Bicarbonate can kill and or

deter Slugs, cutworms, roaches, ants, and other pests it also works brilliantly against fungi

and bugs when used as a foliar spray in the gardens. Considering the alkaline residue that

baking soda left on plant surfaces, fungus spores cannot grow there at all. There are no spores

that can survive, and the mildew and fungus that is already there kill them off because it lacks

a suitable environment. (Gordon, 2020). Wood vinegar enhances soil quality, gets rid of bugs,

and regulates plant growth. It promotes the growth of leaves, flowers, fruits, stems, roots, and

tubers. Wood vinegar is safe for living things in the food chain when used at prescribed

doses, especially for insects that pollinate plants. Water will be the base of the pesticide as it

prevents the solution of wood vinegar and baking soda from becoming too strong.

Statement of the Problem

Generally, this study will be conducted to determine if wood vinegar is a great pesticide

and fertilizer for cherry tomato crops. Specifically, it aims to answer the following

question:

1. What is the effect of 25:5:75 concentration of wood vinegar, baking soda, and water

in terms of the yield performance of cherry tomato in kilograms per plot?

2. What is the effect of 50:10:40 concentration of wood vinegar, baking soda, and water

in terms of the yield performance of cherry tomato in kilograms per plot?

3. What is the Effect of 75:5:20 concentration of wood vinegar, baking soda and water

in terms of the yield performance of cherry tomato in kilograms per plot?

Statement of the Hypothesis

The following are the null hypothesis of the study:

1. There is no significant difference in using 75:5:75 concentration of wood vinegar,

baking soda, and water in the yield of cherry tomato in kilogram per plot.

2. There is no significant difference in using 50:10:40 concentration of wood vinegar,

baking soda, and water in the yield of cherry tomato in kilogram per plot.

3. There is no significant difference in using 75:5:20 concentration of wood vinegar,

baking soda, and water in the yield of cherry tomato in kilogram per plot.
