Abstract

The main objective of this project is to design a smart dustbin which will help in
keeping our environment clean and also eco-friendly. We are inspired from the
Swachh Bharat Mission. Nowadays technologies are getting smarter day- by-
day so, as to clean the environment we are designing a smart dustbin by using
Arduino. This smart dustbin is built on the microcontroller-based system having
ultrasonic sensors on the dustbin. If dustbin is not maintained than these can
cause pollute that affect our health. In this proposed technology we have
designed a smart dustbin using ARDUINO UNO, along with ultrasonic sensor,
servo motor, and battery jumper wire. After all the hardware and software
connection, now smart dustbin program will be run. Dustbin lid will open when
someone comes near at some range than wait for user to put garbage and close
it. It’s properly running or not . For social it will help toward health and
hygiene, for business we try to make it affordable to as many as possible. So
that normal people to rich people can take benefit from it.

 Introduction
 Automatic Dustbin is a extraordinary dustbin which use ultrasonic
sensor to detect presence of human and open and close the lid
automatically. This will prevent touching the lid and also will close
the lid automatically so, bad odour cannot spread. This Dustbin is
powered by a battery and a Arduino Uno circuit which can increase
its functionalities. We can add more features to it including solar
charged battery.

 What is Design Thinking?

 Design thinking is a method to solve problem used by designers and to

find desirable solution . A design mindset is not problem focused, it’s

design thinking has come to be defined as combining empathy for the
context of a problem , creativity in the generation of insight and solution
and rationality in analysing and fitting various solution to the problem
context. According to Our team our goal Design Thinking is “ matching
people’s needs with what is technologically feasible and viable as a
business strategy”.

LDCE A’BAD 5
Design Engineering BE-SEM-lll

 Design thinking is a holistic way of applying critical thinking to

solving design-related problems that matter to people. Specifically,
Design Thinking is a way to learn about, gain insight into, and deeply
understand human beings.

 An introduction to Design Thinking starts by placing the human

experience of what people want, need, and value – at the canter of your
design thinking.

 As opposed to optimizing for other metrics or stakeholders, like product

speed, financial profits, or aesthetics, the design thinking process starts
by prioritizing the primal needs of the human users.

 Importance of Design Thinking :-

 The importance of design has been constantly increasing over the years.
The consumers of today’s generation have quick access to the global
marketplaces. They do not distinguish between physical and digital
experience any more. This has made it difficult for companies to make
their products or services stand out from the rest of the companies. The
times that we live, is in demand innovation. It is impossible for a
business to really make waves without innovation. Design thinking is
the tool kit for innovation. It is targeted to focus on the core of the
problem. Design thinking is like a map.

3) AEIOU Summary :-

 Environment :-
 Environments include the entire arena where activities take place. What is

the character and function of the space overall, of each individual's

spaces and of shared spaces ?

 Interactions :-
 Interactions are between a person and someone or something else; they
are the building blocks of activities. What is the nature of routine and
special interactions between people; between people and objects in
their environment, and across distances?

 Objects :-
 Objects are building blocks of the environment, key elements sometimes put

to complex or unintended uses (thus changing their function, meaning and

context). What are the objects and devices people have in their
environments and how do they relate to their activities?

 Activity :-
 Activities are goal directed sets of actions—paths towards things people

want to accomplish. What are the modes people work in, and the specific
activities and processes they go through?

 Users:-
 Users are the people whose behaviours, preferences, and needs are being

observed. Who is there? What are their roles and relationships? What
are their values and prejudices?

LDCE A’BAD 8
Design Engineering BE-SEM-lll

 Automatic dustbin is used to collect garbage and waste and it replaces

regular dustbins, hence its environment is usually places where regular
dustbins are used such as home, offices, school, colleges etc. Such places
will contain objects such as Phones, Computers, Furniture & other
infrastructure, Broom, Mop etc. The people interacting with the automatic
dustbin can be anyone general public to students, faculties, cleaners etc
depends on the place it is used. The places where this dustbin can be used
deals with activities such as cleaning, education, playing (Art & Craft),
meeting or other general activities where waste is generated and needs to
be collected.

4) Empathy Canvas
 Empathy Map is the canvas where designer has to observe and understand
the emotional needs of the user, and on the basis of empathy of user he will
think of the solution. Empathy canvas consists of happy and sad sides of the
product, Activities that are to be done, Users of the product and the
stakeholders.

Design Engineering BE-SEM-lll

5) Ideation Canvas :-

 Ideation canvas consists of activities that are done at that absent involved in
the activity, under what situation the observation and interaction was done
with the people and at what location also what are the possible solutions that
come to the mind.

 People :
 Any person who wants to throw garbage.
 Cleaners in school or colleges
 Students & Faculties

LDCE A’BAD 11
Design Engineering BE-SEM-lll

 Activities :
 Some Paper Waste is generated
 When dusty floor is cleaned
 During lunch time
 During Events like exam, competition, technical events
 Throw Garden waste like leaves, flowers, twigs and branches.

 Situation/Context/Location :
 When Student wants to throw plastic wrapper or aluminium foil after lunch time
 When Someone don’t want to touch the lid to throw waste.
 Locations can be classroom, campus, library, staffroom etc

 Props/Possible Solution :
 The Props used in Automatic dustbin are Plastic Container, Arduino Uno, Battery
and Servo Motor.
 While analysing the user problems, we came up with various possible solutions
scenario as Under :

1) Solar Powered Battery :

 Although the normal battery can last long and is very efficient but it can be further
upgraded to be powered by solar energy.
 Pros :
 Powered by Solar Energy so very long life span.
 No recharging of battery replacement problem.

 Cons :
 Solar powered Battery is very costly.
 Cannot be used in indoor use.

6) Product development canvas :-

 Product development canvas deals with:-

 Purpose : Why the product was design?

 Our purpose to develop this product is to increase hygiene and cleanliness by
developing a dustbin that opens and closes automatically when user is near it.
Hence no contact is needed and pushing technology to taking over regular
dustbins.

 People : For whom the product was design?

 This product is designed for all general people including home, students &
faculties at school & colleges etc.

 Product Experience : How was the product after using it ?

 The product will work efficiently as expected. It is Reliable and can last very long.

 Product Function : What was the function of product?

 To detect human presence and open and close the lid automatically.
 To collect garbage and waste.

 Components : What things were used to make the product?

 The Final product includes a Plastic Container to collect waste, Arduino Uno
circuit connected with ultrasonic sensors to detect user presence, a battery to
power circuit and a servo moto to open and close lid.

Reject, Redesign, Retain : It consists of what things were rejected by the user, what
changes are to be done and what things need not to be done.

 The product is redesigned to include ultrasonic sensor include to IR sensor

to make it more efficient.
 Also the solar powered battery idea needs to be worked out because it
cannot be used in indoor environment where sunlight is not available.

7) Mind Mapping :-
 Mind mapping helps you to release all of the ideas in your head and gives you the
opportunity to see those ideas visually. It is a fast and simple way to get your
creative juices flowing, and the only tools you need are a pen or pencil and your
design notebook.

8) Prototype Model

 When no one is using it.

 When someone is about to use it.

9) Future Scope
 This dustbin will first start changing to regular dustbin . And as technology
will evolve and IOT will become wide available we can even upgrade it by
using solar powered battery.

 We can also add the Arduino GSM Shield to send the notification to the
concerned authority when the dustbin is filled, so it will avoid overflow.
