Reflection
After going through this lesson, (DepEd Mandate, Vision, Mission, Core Values, and
Strategic Directions), answer in your journal the following questions:

1. In what concrete ways has this session helped you become a more agentive teacher
in promoting “learner-centered” teaching?
I was able to understand the center idea of this session that will help me to promote
this approach in my work. It has reminded me to make the learners as the heart of
teaching-learning process. It helped me out to organize more learning activities that would
help the learners to improve more their skills and subjects of interest.
2. How has this session helped you clarify your vision and motive in serving your
learners better and in promoting a learner-centered environment for them?
This session helped me clarify my vision and motivate me in serving the learners
better through understanding the main purpose of my work as a teacher. It is not necessary
that we finish all talks inside our class we also have to give chance to our learners. It gives

me some guidelines on how to attain the DepEd Vision, mission and my own vision as a
facilitator of the learners.
3. What is the impact of the Department Mandate, VMV and Strategic Directions in
your vocation as a teacher? How can your understanding of DepEd’s Mandate and VMV
provide impact to your work as a teacher?
I realize how vital my function is as a teacher through understanding DepEd’s
Mandate, VMV and Strategic Directions. We must be fully equipped with ideas so that we
can deliver our lesson well since we are the facilitator of learning. We are the one who
promote quality education and producing learners who well-equipped with lifelong
learning skills. Thus, it rekindled the passion burning within me in inspring to become a
committed teacher.
4. What are your personal beliefs and values that are aligned with the DepEd’s VMV?
I believe that everyone is entitled to have quality education and that we should
produce learners who possess the core values of DepEd. Every individual is unique and has
different potentials that are needed to improve. And this individual has the right to
improve his/her skills or potentials through education regardless of his culture, behavior,
talent, and beliefs.
5. How can you contribute to improve quality and relevance in education?
In order improve quality and relevance in education I must see to it that I am guided
with my lesson plan, teacher’s guide and curriculum guide, in this way I can be able to
know which competency to use in my teaching and not jumping any lesson. If we try to
follow this practice it is easier for us to battle every lesson of the day because we already
know what to do. Making use of up -dated instructional materials that are relevant to the
lessons. Like, video, and the use of social media and e-learning system if it is applicable and
available.

III. SESSION 3 TEACHING AS A PROFESSION AND AS A VOCATION Desired Learning
Outcome Beginning Teacher

Pre-Test
Read the paragraph below then choose three phrases that best describe your own
philosophy in the teaching profession. Justify your answer.
1. Teaching is a noble profession as well as a vocation that calls to the heart of an
individual. The teacher plays a vital role in the lives of the learners; hence they are called
heroes of the new generations. They touch lives and influence others —making a big
difference to the lives of the learners. Teachers should take pride in upholding the qualities
of being a professional and to live according to the expectations of teaching as a profession
and as a vocation.
a. Phrase 1. ”Teaching is a noble profession as well as a vocation that calls to the
heart of an individual”.
Justification- Teaching is very noble profession because it shapes the character,
values and future of a learner. We must have a heart full of patience and understanding. It
is also a noble profession because it takes courage and passion. A teacher must have the
courage to do what is right for the sake of their students and a profound feeling for
teaching, even if it is exhausting. If a teacher executes his/ duties and responsibilities well,
then probably the learners will value and always remember the teacher.
b. Phrase 2. ”The teacher plays a vital role in the lives of the learners”.
Justification- Aside from educating the learners in academics or extracurricular activities, a
teacher is also responsible for shaping a child's future, making him/her a better human
being. A teacher imparts knowledge, good values, tradition, modern-day challenges and
ways to resolve them within students.
c. Phrase 3:” Teachers are heroes of the new generations”.
Justification- Teachers are heroes of the new generations because they provide the power
of education to today's youth, thereby giving them the possibility for a better future.
Teachers simplify the complex and make abstract concepts accessible to students. They
also expose children to ideas and topics that they might otherwise not have encounter.
They serve also as a guardian to the learners especially in developing their core values to
become a better person.

Activity 1.

1. What is a profession?
It is an occupation that involves specialized training and formal qualification.
2. Is teaching a profession? Why?
Yes, because becoming a teacher we must passed the requisites mandated by the
Philippine Regulatory Commission.
3. What are the requisites by the PRC one should satisfy before he/she becomes a
professional?

Must have passed the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET), Must be a member
of the Philippine Public School Teachers’ Association (PPSTA), Must continuously grow in
the profession by attending or participating in professional development activities and
Must abide by the code of ethics for the profession.

4. What are the qualities of a professional teacher?


Must have a deep understanding of the theoretical knowledge about learning and
human behavior, demonstrates attitudes that foster learning and genuine human
relationship, must have a mastery of the subject matter and must possess competencies in
the use of teaching skills that facilitate student learning.
5. What is a vocation?
A vocation is a calling to and from the heart of an individual. It is your dedication to
your work.
6. When can teaching be a vocation?
When teacher executes his/her duties and responsibilities well beyond his/her
profession as a teacher and when a teacher has the real passion in teaching.
7. What are the characteristics of a teacher who takes teaching as a vocation?
He/she must execute his duties and responsibilities passionately. -always responds
to the strong feeling, or calling for service.
8. How can you make teaching both a profession and a vocation?
I can make it through executing my job as a teacher, following my duties and
responsibilities and with passion of teaching.
10. Write how you manifest the first quality of a professional teacher.
I will use my knowledge of teaching and learning theories to interpret situations
and solve problems that we meet inside the classroom. Like considering the different
perceptions, experience and knowledge of the learners in different topics.
11. Write the attitude you have that foster learning and genuine human relationship.
I have to understand my learners, know them, know their different learning styles,
skills and behaviors. Because knowing your learners could give you a knowledge on how
you handle and teach your learners.
12. What attitude do you need to improve?
The attitude of always complaining for something which I did not try first to do.
13. Write what you do to manifest mastery of subject matter? What do you need to
improve?
Understanding of curriculum, lesson topics and the learning competencies to know
what particular strategies to use in order to achieve the objectives and needs of the
learners. I want to improve my knowledge on how to use e-learning system in the learning
process since the learners are highly up-dated in the use of technologies.
14. What are the effective teaching strategies that you use to facilitate student

Using different student’s activities like, pair and share, mind concept, Illustration
Analysis, Role Playing, Group and Individual Reporting, using venn diagram, presentation
of the student’s output and sharing of ideas. -Picture and illustration analysis. -
Implementing message relay during student’s activities.

15. What are some of your personal beliefs, insights, and habits that help you do
your work well?

“Time is Gold” that every second is important, we have to use our time wisely and
effectively. We cannot undo the time, so we have to finish whatever task we have. And
always comply with the requirements on time. As for my habit, I always communicate and
coordinate with my co-teachers every day for the improvement of my teaching.
Activity 2.
Read and analyze the following situations then share your findings to your peer.
1. Situation 1
Mr. Manalo divided his Araling Panlipunan class according to the abilities and
interests of his students. At the end of the lesson, the groups had the following outputs: The
first group composed a song, the second had a skit, and the third had an artwork. What
professional quality did Mr. Manalo exhibit?
He valued the uniqueness of his learners through giving different activities where
they can apply their different skills.
2. Situation 2
The school principal visited the Science class of Miss Bravo. The principal observed
that Miss Bravo was reading from the textbook and her notes while explaining the lesson
on ecosystem. What could have been done by Miss Bravo to improve her teaching
performance?
She must have a to understand the school curriculum, its content and master it so
that she can execute it well in the class.

Activity 3.

Reflection
As a newly hired teacher, I am already manifesting the following qualities Like
knowing my learner’s different skills, knowledge and experiences which are necessary in
the learning process, mastering of the topic/lesson before executing in the class and
attending seminars and training for my professional growth and seeking advice from
experienced co-teachers.
However, I need to improve my qualities of always complaining for something
without doing it first and the attitude of being inconsiderate to others.

Post-Test

I believe that most of the teachers became a teacher because it is our bread and
butter. But once we already in the teaching field we should start to love our work more
than a profession as a through executing our duties and responsibilities passionately with
ingredients of love and dedication.

IV. SESSION 4: PHILIPPINE PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS FOR TEACHERS (PPST)

2. How will you go to the next higher career stage?
I need to possess all the necessary requisites to be in the next career stage by up-
dating my knowledge, mastery of the curriculum and knows how to implement programs
that caters the needs of the learners.
3. Is it possible for a beginning teacher to stay in 1 career stage for 5–10 years? Why
or why not?
Yes, if he/she never meet the standard requisites to be in the next career stage and if
there’s no professional development happened.

C. What I Learned
a. What are the seven domains of the PPST? Discuss each domain briefly based on your
own understanding.

1. The knowledge of a teacher in the curriculum and how he/she executes it


through his own method and strategies to cater the individual differences of
every learner. How environment is conducive for learning, and the things to be
considered here are the active engagement of the learners.

indicators? DOMAINS- are the characteristics that a teacher should possess in
order to qualified in the Professional Standard for Teachers. STRANDS are the
specific dimensions of teacher’s practices

and measurable teacher behaviors/practices covered in every strand in the set
of professional standards for teachers . 2. Why do we need to set standards for
teachers? In order for us to attain the quality education that we are aiming for
the learners. 3. As a beginning teacher, which do you consider as the most

Thus he/she needs to master the lesson and demonstrate it properly through the
use of different strategies in which the learners could apply their knowledge of

From Beginning there is demonstration while being a Proficient Teacher, you must
apply and use the skills and knowledge that you have.

Domain 3 to address diversity of learners?
Giving them different activities in which they can apply their skills and knowledge.

4. To address learner diversity, what teaching practices would you employ to enable
you to move from beginning to the proficient career stage?
The pedagogical strategies we should employ must reflect an understanding of
social identity development so that we could anticipate what would happen inside the
classroom, we will know what best approach and method of teaching to be
implemented. In this situation, the teacher begins to establish a learner centered
culture in the teaching process.

Reflection
As a teacher, what are the indicators under beginning stage that you can do? Is it
possible that you can move to the higher career stage?
Knowing where you are, what professional development goals could you prepare
based on your strength and areas for improvement? -I can demonstrate knowledge of
understanding differentiated teaching to suit the learner’s gender, needs, strengths,
interests and experience. The professional development goals that I can prepare based
from my strength and areas of improvement is I would let my learners reign in the class
by involving them in different activities that would give them a sense of confidence and
pride in their work.

SESSION 5: CAREER PATH WITHIN THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

Resolve the issue
1. Teacher A is a Teacher III in Rizal Elementary School for 5 years. She was able to
earn a master’s degree in educational leadership and management with
specialization in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment. Coincidentally, there is
one Master Teacher I (Salary Grade 19) item available in the school and one Senior
Education Program Specialist (SG 19) in the division office. The division office and
the school are situated in the city. Given the situation, if you are Teacher A, which
position would you choose? Why?
I will choose the position of Master Teacher I (Salary Grade 19) because my
qualifications are commensurate for this position which are, to have at least 3 years of
experience as Teacher III, and at least 18 units for MA in Education or its equivalent,
whereas to qualify me for the position of Education Program Specialist, I need first to have
at least 2 years of experience as Principal or 2 years as Head Teacher or 2 years as Master
Teacher. So, based on the qualification standards, I will opt for MTI.

Professional development is needed to grow and advanced in our career. It also


helps us to widen and deepen our knowledge and skills, improve our teaching
strategies, and grow professionally to become an effective and efficient teacher.

2. How does professional development affect your teaching performance?

Professional development affects my teaching performance in a good way. Various


strategies and practices can be acquired by engaging in developing ourselves
professionally.

3. Would you recommend these professional development activities to your


colleagues? Why or why not?

Yes, I will recommend these to my colleagues because professional


development activities to help them grow and improve professionally, and
reach their targeted goals in their career.

E. Beginning with an End in Mind

Knowing your own strengths and weaknesses, draw a professional development road
map. Make this activity an illustration of your personal journey, and how you view
yourself 6 years from now.

Here’s what’s required on the road map:

 The first stop on the road map should be your entry to public school system; you
can decide how the map “ends” in 10 years from now.

 There should be five other “stops” on the map, representing different key
concepts that could help or hamper your journey in achieving professional
development. They may be experiences that you have or have yet to experience.

 Record three major future events that you hope will happen on your road map.
Indicate on your map your age when you want these things to happen. (Possible examples-
graduating from graduate school, getting promoted, implemented innovations, and
improved teacher development stage etc.
 The map should have small illustrations of each event—this can be a symbol,
picture, magazine cut-out, clip art, etc.
 The map should be in color! How you decorate and map out your professional
growth journey is up to you.
