Chapter 1

Introduction

1.1 Background of study

The word auditorium originates from the latin word "auditorius" which translates to " one who hears" or
" related to hearing" . Auditorium is a large building used for public gathering, typically speeches or
stage performance. The audience sits distinct from the stage/area on which the performance or other
object of the audience attention is presented. A sloping floor allows the seats to be arranged to give a
clear view of the stage. The walls and ceilings usually contain concealed light, sound equipment and air
extracts or inlets and may be highly decorated.

The term Auditorium is also applied to a reception room in a monastery, the audience area in a religious
building but more commonly to a large lecture room in a tertiary institution as in the case of this
project, where seminars, talk shows, workshops and lectures can be held.

1.2 Statement of the problem

Advancement in science and technology is made daily, necessitating the need to keep learning and
updating ones knowledge. The school of industrial and applied science is faced with this challenge of
keeping it's students updated with current science innovations due to the unavailability of a suitable and
conducive auditorium to host such events as science talk shows, seminars and workshop. Hence, the
need for an auditorium for the school of industrial and applied science.

1.3 Aims and objectives

The aim and objective of this project is to design and construction a 500 capacity auditorium for the
school of industrial and applied sciences

1.4 Significance of the study

The following are the significance of the study

1. This project will educate professionals in building technology and other stakeholders in the building
industry on the appropriate steps to be taken in designing and construction of an Auditorium

2. This project will serve as a research base to other scholar's and researchers interested in carrying out
further research in this field subsequently.

1.5 Scope of the study

The project focus strictly on the core requirements of an Auditorium namely, a stage,a sloped floor,
convenience, store and reception. Anthropometrics was considered in determining the capacity of the
auditorium.

1.6 Limitation of the study

* Financial constraints: Insufficient funds tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher's in sourcing
some relevant materials and in the final production of the work.

* Time constraints: The researcher's will simultaneously engage in this project with other academic
work. This consequently will cut down on the time devoted to the project work.

1.7 Feasibility study

Preliminary studies carried out at the early stage of the project to establish if the project is viable,
identify feasible options and develop project execution plans. The project feasibility was accessed in five
specific areas.

* Technical feasibility

In this area,we studied the project from a technical aspect, this involves considering :

1. Location: the site is situated opposite federal polytechnic garden, towards the evening program
building

2. Accessibility: the site can be easily accessed from the Rector's gate and via various interconnecting
roads on the school.

3. Electricity : Due to unstable supply of electricity in the site environs. It is recommended that a
generator be provided on site to provide electricity whenever it's needed.

4. Communication: the site location enjoys good network service from service providers.

5. Soil investigation: the soil is a reddish clay soil. It has 10% less weatherable materials in the top layer
and a saturation base of 35% throughout the soil. It has a bearing capacity of 102Kn/m

* Economic feasibility: in this step, we determine if the project is economically viable. Using current
market trends,we estimate the project to cost around 200 million,if cost and material management
methods are properly followed.

* Legal feasibility: this project would be performed in accordance with standards to be obtained from
OCDA,land ownership, planning permission and taxation were considered.

* Operational Feasibility: this stage accessed how the proposed 500 capacity auditorium would solve the
problem mentioned in statement of the problem

* Scheduling Feasibility: A project will fail if not completed on time. In scheduling feasibility,we estimate
how long it will take to complete the project if it's properly funded.we also considered the design,
material budget, environmental impact regulations and risk areas of the project.we estimate the project
should last for 14 months.
