This document describes how to use a Saybolt Viscometer to determine the kinematic viscosity of a fuel sample. The Saybolt Viscometer controls the heat of the fluid and measures the time it takes for a 60cc sample to fill a container. The procedure involves heating the fuel sample to 17°C and 60°C in the viscometer and measuring the time it takes to flow into a conical flask, with readings recorded. The kinematic viscosity is then calculated using the measured times, temperature, and known constants.

To Determine the Kinematic Viscosity for a Given Sample of Fuel by
Saybolt Viscometer
Saybolt Viscometer
A device is used to measure the viscosity of a fluid. The say bolt
viscometer controls the heat of the fluid and the viscosity is the time it takes the fluid to fill a 60cc container. The device used for the measurement of viscosity is known as a viscometer. ● The viscosity of a fluid is a measure of its resistance to gradual deformation by shear stress or tensile stress. ● The units of viscosity are poise and centipoise. ● specific viscosity is the ratio of the viscosity of the fluid to the viscosity of water at 20 degrees Celsius. Since the water has a viscosity of 1 cp at 20 degrees Celsius. ● Kinematic viscosity is defined as the ratio of dynamic viscosity to the density of the fluid.
The following procedure is carried out in order to perform the analysis:
1. First of all, take a beaker or flask and weigh it. 2. Then take a known quantity of fuel in it and then passed into the cup of the viscometer filled it completely. 3. After this, a thermometer is inserted into a heated water bath and the cup is kept in the heated reservoir. 4. The sample is now heated at 17 degrees centigrade. 5. When the temperature is achieved then the control value is open to allow the flow is conical flask and note time at this moment by stopwatch. 6. Repeat the whole procedure for the next temp of 60 degrees centigrade.
Readings and Observations:
