AIM OF THE EXPERIMENT
To determine the coefficient of discharge of liquid flowing through
venturimeter
APPARATUS USED

• Venturimeter
• Pump and motor for steady supply of water
• Stopwatch
• Measuring tank.
THEORY
Venturimeter is a device consisting of a short length of gradual convergence and a long length of gradual
divergence. Pressure tapping is provided at the location before the convergence commences and another pressure
tapping is provided at the throat section of a Venturimeter. The difference in pressure head between the two tapping
is measured by means of a U-tube manometer. On applying the Continuity equation & Bernoulli‟s equation
between the two sections, the following relationship is obtained in terms of governing variables.
Theoretical Discharge (Qth) is given by
ured by the manometer is given by

Where a1 and a2 are Area of inlet pipe and throat respectively,

H=Head loss measured by the manometer is given by
In which x= manometric reading,

𝑆m = Specific gravity of manometric liquid (=13.6)

𝑆m = Specific gravity of water (=1).

The coefficient of discharge (𝐶d) of venturimeter is defined as the ratio of the actual discharge to that
theoretical discharge given by
PROCEDURE
• Fill in the sump tank with clean water
• Keep the delivery valve closed
• Connect the power cable to 1pH , 220v , 10amp with earthing
• Switch on the pump and open the delivery valve
• Open the corresponding ball valve of the venturimeter pipeline
• Adjust the flow through the control valve of the pump
• Open the corresponding ball valve fitted to venturimeter tapping
• Note down the differential head reading in the manometer
• Operate the butterfly valve to note down the collecting tank reading against the
known time.
• Change the flow rate and repeat the experiment
Calculations
• Area of measuring tank = 0.12 m^2
• Diameter of venturimeter d = 12.5 m
• Diameter of inlet pipe of venturimeter D = 25mm
OBSERVATION TABLE

The coefficient discharge of (Cd) = 0.9348

PRECAUTIONS
• Do not start the pump if voltage is less 180 V
• Do not forget to give electrical neutral and earth connection correctly
• It is danger if no water being there in the sump tank
• Initially, put clean water free from foreign material , and change once in a three
month
• At least every week , operates the unit for five minutes to prevent clogging of the
moving part
SOURCES OF ERROR
• Set the manometer pressure to the atmospheric pressure by opening the
upper valve.

• Now start the supply at water controlled by the stop valve.

• One of the valves of any one of the pipes open and close all other of three.

• Take the discharge reading for the particular flow.
