What is a Research Hypothesis?

A research hypothesis is a statement that discusses the
research topic and proposes an anticipated outcome.
The testable assumption or inferences connected
to your research topic is known as the research
hypothesis . The research topic and what you
want to know about the study are interconnected
by the research hypothesis .

What is a Research Hypothesis?

Putting the hypothesis in your research paper is a way
to show how you think your study will turn out and
what its conclusion will be. When you write a
hypothesis, you are making an educated guess based
on the scientific studies and literature you read to
prepare for your research topic.

Good Research Hypothesis
5

Checklist to Evaluate the Research Hypothesis:

▪ Does your hypothesis predict how your study
will go and what it will find?
▪ Is your hypothesis stated clearly, easily
understood, and directly to the point?
▪ Is your hypothesis testable?
▪ Is your hypothesis connected to the
research question?
How to Formulate an Effective
Research Hypothesis
7

STEP 1. Write a Question

The initial step in writing a hypothesis is to develop a question you
want to answer. It should be precise, clear, and able to be
researched within the limits of your project.
Example of Questions:
▪ Does getting more sleep make a person feel better
about life?
▪ Does eating more vegetables help you do
better in math?
▪ Is being in a relationship at a young age
connected to teenage pregnancy?
8

Step 2. Conduct Research about the Topic

It would be best if you started by answering the question
based on what you already know about the topic. Look for
relevant information that will guide you in developing
intelligent guesses or predictions about what the results of
your study.
9

Step 3. Write your Hypothesis

The information you have gathered should have provided you with
an idea of the expected outcomes of your research. You can now
write your hypothesis by answering the question you wrote in step 1.
10

Step 4. Refine your hypothesis

Refine your hypothesis by making sure that it is clearly
stated and can be tested. There are many ways to write
a hypothesis, but all the words you use should be
defined clearly, and the hypothesis should include:
▪ the research variables
▪ The participants / group being studied
▪ The predicted result of the research
11

Independent Variables are the ones that are

manipulated, controlled, or changed. Independent
variables are isolated from other factors of the study.

Dependent Variables, as the name suggests are

dependent on other factors of the study. They are
influenced by the change in independent variable.
12

Step 5. Write a null hypothesis

If statistical hypothesis testing is part of your
research, you will also have to write a null hypothesis.
The null hypothesis says that the variables don't have
anything to do with each other. H0 stands for the null
hypothesis, and H1 or Ha stands for the alternative
hypothesis.
13

H0: The number of lectures attended by first-year

students has no effect on their final exam scores.

H1: The number of lectures attended by first-year

students has a positive effect on their final exam scores.
14
15

Simple Hypothesis
It predicts the relationship between a single
dependent variable and a single independent variable.

Complex Hypothesis
It predicts the relationship between two or more
independent and dependent variables.
Importance of a
Testable Hypothesis
17

To use the scientific method to plan and carry out

an experiment, you need to make sure that your
hypothesis can be tested. Some important criteria
must be met for something to be testable:
▪ There has to be a way to show that the
hypothesis is right.
▪ A way must exist to show that the hypothesis
is wrong.
▪ The results of the theory must be able to be
repeated.
