Variations in animals:

Mammals:

 Hair
 Lungs
 Warm blooded
 Can live on land or water
 Give birth to live babies, few mammals lay eggs.
 Whales & dolphins are mammals that live in the sea but are air breathing.
 No legs or 4 legs.

Amphibians:

 Amphibious: happy on land & water.


 Nearly all amphibians lay eggs, usually in or near water.
 When amphibians hatch, they have gills- breathe underwater.
 Get older, develop lungs- breathe air.
 Most have 4 legs, few with no legs.
 Smooth skin.
 Cold blooded- they become the same temperature as their surroundings.
 Toads = amphibians.
 Live in water & on land
 Don’t have hair
 Hibernate in the winter.

Birds:

 Birds evolved from dinosaurs.


 All birds lay eggs.
 Beaks, feathers, 2 legs & 2 wings.
 Special feathers on their wings so they can fly.
 Some birds don’t fly, so they get around in other ways.
 Ostrich, can’t fly – long powerful legs & can run fast.
 Penguin, can’t fly – great in water.
 Lungs- breathe air like mammals.
 Warm blooded.

Fish:

 No legs
 Live in water
 Don’t breathe air
 Gills- allow them to breathe underwater.
 Most fish lay eggs-soft.
 Scales

Reptiles:

 Dry, scaly skin


 Lungs, lay eggs & cold blooded.
 Not all reptiles have 4 legs, some have no legs.
 Some give birth to live young.
 Live in water and on land.

Are toads amphibians?

 They live in water and on land.


 They don't have scaly skin.
 They lay their eggs in water which are covered in jelly not a shell.
Toads change during their lifetime during a process called
metamorphosis.
