Eugene Wong, PhD, FCCPM

Zoom office hour: Friday 3:30-4:30 pm (link from OWL)
Sept 20 2021

Today’s agenda
• OWL Announcements
• Labs, Group Assignment, TopHat Assignment 1 (Graded)
• Chapter 4: 2D Kinematics
• Projectile motion
• Circular motion

2021-09-19

In-person lab starts this week

• Your lab date and room can be determined from OWL
Lab Schedule Tab (Sections 3AB, 4AB starts today)
• Projectile motion – please bring your safety goggles!
• We have one Lab PC for every two students. But you
may bring your own device (Excel, video analysis app).
• Worksheet: print or bring it on your own device.

Group Project – Setup due 11:59 pm Sept 22

• Find your MS Teams join code and Group (e.g. “F10”) on OWL
PostEM
• Post on OWL Forum Group Assignments if you have any difficulties.
• Go to MS Teams and join your MS Team. Each MS Team group has
~140 students
• Look for your group name (e.g. “F10”) in the channel. Be sure to look
under “hidden channels”
• If it is not there, create a channel and leave a message to your group.
• If it is there, then go into it and leave a message.
• You will can conveniently record ppt slides on Teams, and upload your
video assignment in your group channel.

TopHat Assignment 1 (Graded)

For grade, you
are only required
to complete
Assignment 1
(Graded)
( 21 problems)
by Sept 29.

Answers to odd
number
questions can be
found in
Appendix A on
TopHat.

Relationships (3.4, 3.6)

From constant acceleration to velocity
𝑣 𝑡 = 𝑣0 + 𝒂𝑡
From constant acceleration to velocity to position
1
𝑥 𝑡 = 𝑥0 + 𝒗𝟎 𝑡 + 𝒂𝑡 2
2
You can solve all constant acceleration problems with these two
equations.
𝑣 𝑡 2
− 𝑣02 = 2𝒂Δ𝑥
The third equation comes from the first two. Therefore, you don’t
have 3 independent equations.
The most you can solve is for is two unknowns for constant
acceleration problems!
