Starry night by Vincent van Gogh

By Eyad Yasser
introduction
The Starry Night is a painting by Vincent van
Gogh that shows an immense field filled with
brightly shining stars above a dark forest
below. The constellation Orion is prominently
featured, as is Taurus the Bull, Scorpius the
Scorpion, and Sagittarius the Archer. This
painting is one of the most famous and
beloved paintings in history and is rightly
considered one of the greatest works of art
ever created. The painting was created at
Saint-Rémy-de-Provence on July 30, 1889,
when van Gogh was living there with his
brother Theo. At the time, van Gogh was not
selling any paintings, so his brother helped
support him financially by providing funds to
paint. The painting is approximately ten
square feet (one square meter) on canvas
measuring 24 inches by 36 inches (61 cm x 91
cm

earlier drawings or memories of van Gogh after
returning from Paris, where he had seen some
beautiful modern buildings and the sky at night
filled with stars.
P2

He wrote this work based on his own

experiences and observations of the world
around him. He wanted to communicate the
essence of human existence to readers, and
to show what he has seen through these
simple signs.
He said “"I wanted to express through these
simple signs something human and eternal;
to tell our existence as we see it—to show
what we have seen."

Description
Starry night
Vincent Van Gogh
Oil on canvas
1889/ July 30
A nighttime scene is
painted from an elevated
position, showing a town,
hills, and sky. There are
swirls, stars, Church and
buildings in the
foreground, and a large
tree in the center and the
moon in the background.
Analysis
The artist has utilized a cold color
scheme of blues, greens, and violets,
with a complementary orange-ish
yellow illuminating the lights and stars.
Colored brush strokes vary in line width
and direction. There is also a striking
contrast here between the geometric
designs of the dwellings and the
organic curves of the surrounding
countryside. The waves in the night sky
and the brushwork utilized to create
movement With its wavy patterns, the
tree also generates a sensation of
mobility.
interpretation

This artwork creates a sense

of calmness and tranquility,
with the soothing colors of
the sea and the bright, fiery
colors of the moon creating
a sense of excitement at the
same time. The gentle
curves and waves of the
colors are also calming,
reminding me of the rolling
waves on the sea.
Finally
judgment

This is a masterwork that

employs artistic concepts
to produce an emotive
and life-filled artwork.
The subject matter
conveys a sense of
tranquility, but the colors
correlate to produce a
sense of exhilaration in
the midnight sky. This is
an absolute post-
impressionist gem!
