1. Semiotic Plane:
Form: Mural
Location: Brgy. Villarica, Babak District, Island Garden City of Samal, Philippines
ELEMENTS:
There is a diagonal line that can be seen on how the child slouches to study. This
indicates action or movement. The colors used to paint the surroundings of the child are darker
colors. This depicts that there are hardships, a gloomy atmosphere, and somewhat hopelessness.
However, the colors that were used to paint the child and the things around the house are rich in
color. This means that there is life and there’s still hope. There is an emphasis on the child
studying. The shapes that are present in the work are organic and representational shapes, as it
refers to something that we can see in the world. It also uses simulated/virtual forms. The artists
used light and shadow effects to create the illusion of three-dimensional form. The texture of the
mural is rough because of the medium used on which it is painted, which is a concrete wall.
ICONIC
(1) Ang Yaman ni Pepe by Apat, U., Enderez, A., and Apat, J., presents the condition
of how the kids of low-income families try to improve their financial state. It can
be seen in the surroundings of the child that they are not from a well-off family,
with a small house with the child’s tiny desk and chair. The child is trying to
study despite the lack of comfort.
(2) It is also presented that hard work despite not being financially blessed is
appreciated and loved by other people.
(1) The artwork shows the state of the economy of the Philippines. Our nation is a
third-world country. Many families don’t have the capacity to send their kids to
school. Many kids just lose interest because of a lack of support from their
parents. However, there are still many ways they can send their kids to school. If
there’s a will, there’s a way.
(2) The statement “Ang kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan” by Dr. Jose Rizal can also
be related to this piece. Quality education or in Tagalog we say “edukalidad” is
the key to the success of a nation. It’s just that the artwork just shows it on a small
scale. It’s just a child of a poor family trying to study and hoping when he finishes
school, he will be able to improve their family’s financial state against all odds.
EVALUATIVE:
In terms of the mediums used in this artwork, it was well chosen. Acrylic paint is the best
type of paint used to create murals as they work on almost all surfaces like floors, and walls.
They are famous for their quick drying and flexibility, which are desirable traits for creating wall
art. All three artists did a great job but there are still some things that are not quite accurately
painted, like the emojis. They are not quite aligned. Maybe because there were three artists
working on this piece, there are styles varying throughout the work.
