Potential Hydroelectric power plant in Ounasjoki river, Marraskoski rapid, Rovaniemi,

Finland
By Kamil Issa

1) Location
This map shows current hydroelectric power plants in Finland. As you can notice, the
location proposed by me is pretty far away from other hydroelectric power plants.

2) Water flowrate each month

In the incoming calculations, I will take into consideration values given by the pink line
since it represents the median of the observed values. Black dots represent observed
values while brown dots represent unreliable observations. Blue line represents simulated
values. During winter months, flow rate is very low because much of the river is frozen.

3) Formula that will be used for calculations.

P out=ζ hydro *p*g*Q*H, [W]
-where P out is the amount of electricity production in Watts
-ζ hydro is the turbine efficiency in %. In this case, I assumed that the efficiency is 90%
-p is the density of water in the river in kg/m^3. In this case, p=1000kg/m^3
-g is the acceleration of gravity in m/s^2. g=10m/s^2
-Q is the flowrate of the river in m^3/s. For calculating power for each month I used
values from the pink line in all months except for May. In this case, since May value is
Qmax=approx. 775m^3/s, I used Q design=Qmax*0.75=>0.75*775=581.25m^3/s
H is the head in meters. Taking into consideration the hilly topography of the area and
heads of other hydroelectric power plants in the area, I assumed H=25m

4) Conclusion: Since this hydroelectric power plant can potentially produce

293.64525GWh electricity annually, it can provide electricity for 41678 households with
families of 4 people. This is a significant segment of population in Finnish Lapland. This
assumption is based on the idea that a planned 155GWh Sierila hydroelectric power plant
can produce enough electricity for 22000 households (source: Sierilä – nykyaikaista ja
vastuullista vesivoimaa - Kemijoki Oy). In 2021, Finland’s electricity production was ( Source:
Electricity sector in Finland - Wikipedia ) 69TWh and 2% of this was produced by peat (1.38TWh
or 1380GWh). If my proposed hydroelectric station is built in the future, Finland can reduce its
peat production by more than 21% annually, reducing pollution significantly.
