Dear Parents,

At GEMS Wellington International School we take great pride in providing our parents with regular and detailed
feedback about their child’s progress at school. To support your discussions with your child, I would like to take
this opportunity to explain the language of assessment we use in Year 10 & 11.
This is the grade that your child is consistently achieving, which can be evidenced
Current Grade
through recent assessment scores.
This is the grade that we anticipate your child will receive at the end of Year 11 if they
Anticipated Grade continue working in the same way. This is a judgement grade based on current grade,
coursework components and ATL (attitude to learning grades).
Attitude to Learning (ATL) refers to the level of effort and engagement demonstrated
ATL each and every lesson by your child, with 1 being the highest grade and 4 being the
lowest.

The GCSE grading system is used to assess our KS4 students for all subjects. You will find that this is reported
within the old grading system (A*-E) and the new grading system (9-1), with grade 9 being the highest grade.
This is determined by the exam board for each subject area.

Each GCSE grade reported could have an additional ‘+’ or ‘-‘ symbol attached to it. This is there to indicate how
well your child is working within a particular level. The table below explains the meaning behind the grading
system.

A grade with the symbol ‘+’ at the end would indicate that a student is working at the top of that grade
5+ and would be looking to move to the next grade. They would have mastered the skills required at that
particular grade.
A grade without the ‘+’ or ‘-‘ symbol at the end would indicate that a student is working well within the
5
grade. They would be secure in the skills required at that particular grade.
A grade with the symbol ‘-’ at the end would indicate that a student has started to work at that grade.
5-
They would be emerging in and developing the skills required for that particular level.

It should be noted that if your child is taking a BTEC subject, then the grade range is based on the following
system: Pass (P), Merit (M), or Distinction (D). Please note due to Year 10 studying and completing their English
Literature coursework, English Language grades will not be on this report, as the curriculum has not yet covered
the skills and content of the course.

As your child is in their first year of study for their GCSEs, it is important to remember that they still have time to
build on the strengths already illustrated within this report. If you have any questions about your child’s report,
please do not hesitate to contact me.

We really hope this report gives you the information you need to have positive conversations about your child’s
learning and development so far this year. The success of a child cannot be measured by their academic
success alone, but also by the development of their social and interpersonal skills and contribution to school life.
Every child is different and what matters for us is that they are progressing as well as they can be and trying their
very best in all areas of school life.

We always encourage an open dialogue between teachers and parents: if you would like to speak to a subject
teacher about a grade shared in this report, please do get in contact. We also look forward to seeing you for our
Student Led Conferences on Thursday 5th January 2023. More information is shared below.

Kindest regards,

James Rostron–Vice Principal, Curriculum Strategy

Attitude to Learning
Level
ATL Level Description
Level 1 Your child has an outstanding attitude towards their learning. They are ready to learn
(Highest) every lesson and make positive contributions to class discussions, taking an active
role in their own learning and development. They can be relied upon to work
effectively and efficiently independently. Your child is self-motivated, resilient, and
reflective. They are considerate towards their teachers and have developed positive
and respectful relationships with their peers, demonstrating consideration for others.

Level 2 Your child has a sensible and positive attitude towards their learning. They can be
relied upon to work efficiently and effectively independently. Work is always
completed to a good standard and your child demonstrates some resilience and
takes responsibility for their own learning. They are considerate towards others and
have developed positive and respectful relationships with peers, recognising that
everyone has the opportunity and the environment in which to learn.

Level 3 Your child has a variable attitude towards their learning. They can work
independently, but will often require prompts or reminders to complete tasks or
activities. In lessons, your child is generally ready to learn and, when focused, can
make positive contributions to class discussions. Your child’s commitment to taking
responsibility for their learning is inconsistent. They will sometimes contribute
positively to class discussions and can appreciate the importance of positive
relationships within the classroom.
Level 4 Your child’s attitude towards their learning does not meet our expected standards.
They sometimes take their learning seriously. Your child will complete work when
prompted and reminded by the class teacher. They can sometimes demonstrate that
they can carry out tasks and activities independently. Their attitude towards their
learning can sometimes be detrimental to the learning of other students. There are
far too many inconsistencies in their performance and this is having an impact upon
their progress.

Please note that you will find different ways of reporting your child’s attainment:
- Grades A*-G (Legacy GCSEs)
- Grades 9-1 (newly reformed GCSEs)

At present, selected subjects are now being graded from 9-1, with legacy GCSEs still be reported in A*-G
grades. The new structure will see a grade 9 sitting above the previous A* grade with grades 4, 5, and 6 spread
out over the legacy C and B grades. The Department for Education (DfE) have stated that a grade 5 will
represent a ‘strong’ pass and grade 4 will represent a ‘standard’ pass.
