PROF. ED. 001: THE CHILD AND ADOLESCENT LEARNERS AND LEARNING
PRINCIPLES
- How will you use your learnings and insights in Prof 001 when you become
Licensed Professional Teacher (LPT) in the near future?

Learning varies from person to person. Some are fast learners while others are on the edge
of falling behind. Truly in a school with an average of 40 students per class, diversity of learners
is inevitable and should be catered to by teachers in a multi-dimensional way. This is quite
challenging for a teacher but it poses beauty in the teaching profession.

One thing that is a highlight of my takeaways from Prof. Ed. 1 about child and adolescent
learners and learning principles is that students’ development varies depending on how they are
brought up and taught during their childhood and adolescent years. These years are
foundational and thus vital for their growth and development whether it is on the physique,
mental, social, emotional, or even spiritual. I have learned that teachers should consider the
different backgrounds of the students before implementing any method for teaching and
learning.

In a classroom of different students, I will strive to teach them with consideration and
understanding. Some of them might be good in Math but not in English and one student is the
other way around. Things can surely be different and a teacher must be ready to acknowledge
the different strengths and weaknesses of their students. Howard Gardner, an American
psychologist, even studied and observed multiple intelligences in different individuals. Thus, I
should be mindful of this reality because this allows different potentials and talents to foster.

On the other hand, this course taught me to view learning as a developmental process.
Different age brackets learn and acquire different skills. As years of learning pass by, a learner
matures and grows holistically. Yet, some students are not really keeping up with the
developmental stages. This can be seen in how some students in classes do not perform well.
They may be seen as those displaying off-task and disruptive behaviors. It takes a lot of patience
and hard work to teach these students in a real classroom setting.

Adding up, the notion that ’development is life-long’ keeps ringing in my head. It reminds me
of another notion that ‘learning is life-long.’ Both development and learning are two distinct
entities that are inseparable. The development comes from learning, and learning comes from
development. That’s why I will teach my students to learn on their own and assess the
development they’ve achieved. In this way, students will become life-long learners.

As a teaching professional, it’s a must to become well-versed in different learning principles.

In this way, you will be able to cater to your students’ distinct characteristics very well and work
towards nourishing them. There’s indeed beauty in diversity when teachers learn to diversify
their teaching and learning processes.
