PAPER 1: “Among the seven domains of the PPST, which one do you think is your weakest
and how do you plan to develop this domain in the next 2-3 years as part of your career
development?”

The 21st Century teaching focuses on teaching standards or standards of teaching

practice which define what teachers and school leaders should be able to do. Therefore,
teachers are placed at the center of the school in the teaching standards. (Beck et al., 2002;
CEPE, 2013)

The rapid changes and increased complexity of today’s education present new
challenges on the part of the teaching profession. The improvement of technology, new
trends in the teaching and learning process, social changes and dealing with the 21 st
Century Learners are some of the changes that we teachers are facing today. The
implementation of professional standards for teachers is one way of improving the teacher
quality of the country.

In accordance with this, the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers (PPST)
targets to produce quality and better teachers in the country by improving the qualification
of educators and increasing their level of knowledge, practice and professional engagement.

As a matter of fact, we teachers have our own weaknesses and strengths. In lieu
with this, among the seven domains of the PPST, I guess the DIVERSITY OF LEARNERS
is not totally the weakest but my most challenging one. Judith C. Reiff once wrote,
“Students’ ways of learning are as different as the colors of a rainbow”. They learn more
and retain it longer when they have an opportunity to learn and to demonstrate what they
have learned using their preferred learning style. It is in our hands to build and hone
learners to become a better and a productive individual holistically. It is of great challenge
for me especially in my first years of teaching experience in a public school dealing diverse
learners with different backgrounds, experiences and behavior inside the classroom. There
are visual learners learn best by seeing, auditory learners learn best by hearing, and
physical learners learn best through hands-on activities. Some students learn quickly; others
learn rather slowly. Some require substantial teacher help; others are able to learn
independently. So, I must plan very carefully to ensure that all students participate in high-
interest educational activities that are personally relevant. Teachers have a huge impact in
the lives of our learners and so am I, and then I must think of a brilliant way on how to
realize it.
Furthermore, to create such learners we need to take our teaching and learning
above and beyond the basics of knowledge through the 4C’s as I call it the “Super Skills” for
the 21st Century. The first of these is Communication - strong thoughts, questions, ideas and
solutions. Next is Collaboration - working together to reach a goal, putting together talent
and expertise with smart work schedules. The third skill is Critical Thinking – looking at
problems in a new way, linking learning across subjects and disciplines. And the last C is the
skill of Creativity – creating and exploring new approaches to getting things done
innovatively. In the years to come, I think some of the developmental plans I need to apply
is to seek out seasoned teachers or asking a fellow teacher. I believe that seasoned
teachers have wealth of information and are often more than willing to show their
knowledge with others. I also need to read articles, research practices and watch video
scenarios relating the improvement of this domain. And of course, this Project-Free program
is of a great help for me to gain insights and strategies for future use in developing not just
my professional growth but also my whole being.

And this will ensure better instruction in the teaching and learning process that will
greatly contribute in producing knowledgeable, skillful, equipped and globally competitive
learners.

Let me end this with a quote, “A teacher takes a hand, opens a mind and touches a
heart”.
