Final Exam/Assignment

Answer any TWO of the following questions. Your answer should be at least 300 words.

For each answer, you must use at least TWO TEXTS as examples. These texts can be from any part of the syllabus,
from the Renaissance to the contemporary period. For example, to answer the first question, it would make sense to
use an Imagist poem and compare it to a non-Imagist poem from the Renaissance or Romantic period.
Suggestions/hints have been provided in brackets to help you answer each question. (20+20)

1. How did Imagism change poetry? Why do you think they believed those changes needed to be made?
(consider the rules of Imagist poetry)
2. In class, we discussed the issue of otherization, whereby a powerful, dominant group alienates a weaker
group by seeing them as so different that they oftentimes cease to be human. How do “aftermath" and “John
Wayne Gacy, Jr.” portray this sense of otherization? (aftermath -> terrorists / JWG -> serial killers)
3. How does Modernism “Make it new!”? Consider both the content and structure of how literature has evolved
over the years. (free verse, detailed description, etc.)
4. What effect do you think capitalism and the Industrial Revolution have had on literature? (Romanticism,
Modernism)
5. Would you consider ee cummings’ poem “Since feeling is first” to be a Modernist poem or a Romantic one?
Or can it be a bit of both? (emotionalism, “make it new!”) c
