Biology – branch of science which deals with the study of life of all the organisms on earth.

BIOLOGY – “BIOS” means life and “LOGOS” means study

LEVELS OF BIOLOGICAL ORGANIZATIONS

 CELLS
 The smallest unit of life. Two types of cells are plant cell and animal cell.
 TISSUE
 Group of cells performing similar functions. Four types of tissues are epithelial tissue,
muscle tissue, connective tissue and nervous tissue.
 ORGAN
 Group of tissues performing similar functions. A system of tissue that work in a large
scale to do certain job with an animal’s body.
 ORGAN SYSTEM
 Group of organs performing similar functions. They work together to work specific
bodily functions.
 ORGANISM
 An individual living thing that has organized structure. Organisms can be unicellular
organisms such as bacteria or amide. Multi-cellular organisms comprise of organs and
organ system.
 POPULATION
 Group of organisms of one type that live in the same area.
 COMMUNITY
 Population that live together in a defined area. It consists of all different species within a
certain area.
 ECOSYSTEM
 Composed of community and its non-living surroundings and physical components of
the environment.
 BIOSPHERE
 Part of the earth that contains all ecosystems.
