Experiment #3
Aim: Simulation of Power flow transfer between single phase inverter
and grid using Plecs and Matlab Simulink.
Problem Statement:
Design a single phase inverter connected to grid using L-type filter. The
inverter is modulated using unipolar sine-PWM modulation. The
specification of the system is as follows:
Grid voltage: 230 V ac 1phase
Filter inductance: 1 mH
Active Power Transfer: 10 kW
Reactive Power Transfer: 2 KvaR
DC voltage: 400 V dc
Theory:
The power flow between two ports connected by an inductive
impedance jX is given by:
𝑉𝑖𝑛𝑣 𝑉𝑔𝑟𝑖𝑑
𝑃= 𝑠𝑖𝑛 𝛿
𝑋
2
𝑉𝑔𝑟𝑖𝑑 𝑉𝑔𝑟𝑖𝑑 𝑉𝑖𝑛𝑣
𝑄= − 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝛿
𝑋 𝑋
Where Vinv is inverter output voltage, Vgrid is grid voltage, δ is the phase
different between the voltages. X is the inductive reactance.
The single phase inverter operated using unipolar sine PWM scheme
provides at the output an ac voltage whose fundamental frequency
component is vinv. The modulation index of the inverter, both in
magnitude and phase decides the power flow.

2. Formulate the unipolar sine-PWM control circuit in Simulink.
3. Calculate the modulation index, both magnitude and phase for the
inverter operation.
4. Verify the power transfer operation.
Report:
1. Write a Matlab script to calculate the modulation index for a
given active power and reactive power condition.
2. What are the harmonic components generated due to sine-PWM
modulation.
