Proper Use of Nail Care Tools and Equipment and Its Safety Rules

The following are the procedure on how to use/ handle different tools and
equipment:

A. Buffer

1. Hold the buffer firmly with fingers.

2. Apply a small amount of powder over the buffer.
3. Buff the nails with downward strokes from the
base to the free edge of each nail until a smooth
clear gloss has been obtained.

Safety Rule:
• Lift the buffer from the nail after each stroke to
prevent heating and burning sensation.

B. Cuticle Nipper
1. Pick the cuticle nipper by the handle and turn
the cutting edges towards you.
2. Place the bent tip of the index finger over the top
of the shank.
3. Place the thumb on the side of the handle and
the remaining fingers over the opposite handle
4. Squeeze the cuticle nippers to trim the excess

Safety Rule:
• Be careful not to cut the skin surrounding the nails when cutting cuticle to
prevent cuts that can cause infection.

C. Cuticle Pusher

1. Just hold like a pen.

2. Use the flat portion to pushback and loosen
the cuticle.
3. Use the cuticle pusher in a flat position to
remove dead cuticle
4. The pointed portion is used to remove dirt
under the nail edge.

Safety Rule:
• Avoid too much pressure to prevent nail injury on tissues.
• Keep cuticle moist using cuticle remover while working.
• Always handle sharp objects with extra care because this can cause injury.
• Disinfect all nail implements after use to prevent spread of diseases.

6
D. Nail Brush

1. Insert the three fingers- middle, ring and little

fingers in the nail brush handle
2. Brush the nail after pushing and cutting of
dead cuticle to remove dirt.

Safety Rule:
• Brush the nails from the base of the
finger downward to prevent the dirt from getting

(Source: Beatriz A. Adriano and Annabel L. Guardian, K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum,Technology and Livelihood
Education, Beauty Care (Nail Care Services), Department of Education 28-29.)
E. Nail Clipper/Cutter
1. Raise the lever up and turn it in a circular motion180
degrees, then lower the lever again toward the base of the
clippers.
2. Hold the nail clippers in your right hand with your
thumb on the lever and the base resting against
your index finger if you're right handed.
3. Place the head, where the cutting blades are
located, around the fingernail or toenail you intend to
cut.
4. Apply pressure on the lever or handles, being
careful that the head of the clippers remains in
place.
5. Continue exerting pressure until the head cuts
completely through the nail.

Safety Rules:

• Do not place the cutting edges too close to the quick or, where the nail and your skin
connect.
• Trim the nails properly. Improper cutting may cause ingrown in toenails.
• Disinfect nail clipper before and after use.

(Source: “How to Use Nail Clippers.” LEAFtv, last modified, March 14, 2019.
https://www.leaf.tv/articles/how-to-use-nail-clippers/.)

F. Nail File or Emery Board

1. Hold the nail file firmly in the right or left

hand (as the case maybe) in between the thumb
and index fingers.
2. Place the file slightly under the free edge.
3. File the free edge of the nail in one direction
from corner to the center.

7
Safety Rules:
• Never file back and forth for this would cause the nails to crack and split.
• Do not file deep into the corners; this weakens the nails, hurt the nails and
cause ingrown nails.
