1. The longest side of a triangle is 3 ft longer than the shortest side. The
medium is 1 ft longer than the shortest side. If the perimeter of the triangle is
16 ft, what are the length of the three sides?
Step 1:
To find the answer to this question, we need to translate the word problem into an
algebraic expression. To do that, let x be the shortest side.
*Longest side: x + 3
*Medium side: x + 1
*Perimeter: x + 3 + x + 1 + x = 16
Step 2: Since the perimeter is the sum of the sides, add all the sides.
x + 3 ft + x + 1 ft + x = 16 ft
Step 3:
x + 3 + x + 1 + x = 16 (combine all similar terms)
3x + 4 = 16 (transfer 4 to the other side of the equation)
3x = 16 – 4 (subtract 4 from 16)
3x = 12 (divide both sides by 3)
x=4
Step 4: Therefore, the shortest side, x is equal to 4 feet, while the longest side is
equal to 7 feet (4 + 3), and the medium side is equal to 5 feet (4 + 1).
2. Alan can do a certain task in 21 hours, Boy can do the task in28 hours and
Cindy can do the task in 48 hours. Find how it will take to do the if all three
work.
Step 1: You can use that to find out the work done in an hour if all three work
together, and thus the amount of time it will take.
*Alan 1/21
*Boy 1/28
*Cindy 1/48.
Step 2:
Let x be the number of hours it will take all three
to do the task.
Combined rate = 1/x
1/21 + 1/28 + 1/48 =
LCD = 28, 224
Step 3:

1/21 + 1/28 + 1/48 = 1/x
(28)(48)x + (21)(48)x = (21)(28)(48)
1344x + 1008x = 28,224
2352x/2352 = 28,224/2352
x = 12
Step 4: It will take 12 hours to finish the same job together.
3. A man is 7/6 as old as his wife. Twenty years ago, He was twice as old as his
wife. Find their age now.
Step 1: Let x be the age of the wife in the present. The equation should be displayed
like this:
*Age of the man in the present = 7/6x
*Age of the man 20 years ago = 2(x-20)
Step 2:
7/6x = 2(x-20)
Step 3:
Solve for the age of the wife:
7/6(x) - 20 = 2(x-20)
7/6(x) - 20 = 2x-40
7/6(x) = 2x - 20
7x = 6(2x-20)
7x = 12x - 120
12x - 7x = 120
5x = 120
x = 24
Solve for the age of the man:
7/6(x)
7/6(24) = 28
Step 4:
24 is the age of the wife and 28 is the age of the man

6. Bea is 6 years older than Clarize. In ten years, the sum of their age will be
50. Find their present age?
ANS.
n + 10 + (n-6) + 10= 50
2n + 14= 50
2n= 36
n=18
Bea is currently 18 years old and Clarize is 12 years old
7. Jane, Paul and Peter can finish painting the fence in 2 hours. If Jane does
the job alone she can finish it in 5 hours. If Paul does the job alone he can
finish it in 6 hours. How long will it take for Peter to finish the job alone?
ANS.
1/5 + 1/6 + 1 + X = ½
5 x 6 = 30
6/30 + 5/30 +x = 15/30
x= 4/30 = 2/15
x=7.5 hrs
7hrs and 30mins the amount of time it would take Peter to finish the
job alone.
