I. I hope so
A. Study the following dialogues.

Dialogue 1:
Person 1 : I've been rather sick lately.
Person 2 : I hope you feel better soon.

Dialogue 2:
Rita : Where have you been? I have not seen you for two days.
Dewa : Well, I have been sick since Sunday.
Rita : What’s wrong?
Dewa : I’ve had a terrible cold all week.

Dialogue 3:
Janet : What’s your wish, Ron?

Ron : And why is that?
Janet : I'd like to be a writer, instead.
Ron : That’s great either. I hope we can make it come true someday.
Janet : Sure we will.

B. Study these expressions.


1. To say what you hope about the present:
a. I hope so. I’ve worked for this.
b. I hope he's having a good time.

2. To say what you hope about the future:


a. I hope he has a good time next month. (I hope he'll have a good time next
month.)
b. I hope she comes to see us. (I hope she'll come to see)

3. Hope can also be used in expressions of goodwill


1) I hope (that) you have a nice Birthday.
2) I hope (that) you have a nice birthday party.

4. Hope can be used to specify a desired outcome.


1) I hope you can come to the party on Saturday.
2) I hope to get an A on the exam.
3) I hope it doesn't rain tomorrow.

5. Wish
To say what you wish about the future, you use would:
 I wish he would do more to help the poor.

6. Wish is also used in greeting and expressions of goodwill:


1) We wish you a "Happy Birthday."
2) Wish me luck.

7. Wish and hope are also used in certain types of requests and nice remarks. In
such situations, wish carries a more definite and formal tone.
1) I hope to see you again.
2) I know your life has been difficult lately. I hope things get better soon.
3) I can't believe how much bad luck you've had. I hope things get better soon.
4) I'm so sorry you broke your leg. I hope you feel better soon.
5) Stay home for the week. I hope you feel better soon. 

C. Giving Someone General Wishes


1. When someone is celebrating a birthday:
