Introduction of the topic

This podcast is taken from the YouTube channel of

Jay Shetty.
Who is Jay Shetty?

Jay Shetty (born 6 September 1987) is an English

author, former Hindu monk, and life coach of
British Indian descent. As the host of the podcast
On Purpose, his guests have included Alicia Keys,
Khloe Kardashian, and Kobe Bryant, resulting in
over 300 million downloads. He has appeared on
The Ellen DeGeneres Show , Mornings, The and
Today to discuss mental health and life purpose.
The ability to push yourself forward, stay
motivated and take action regardless of how you
are feeling physically or emotionally is called
selfdiscipline. Motivation and will power
contribute to it, as do persistence, the ability to
follow your intentions and hard work.
Its all about the commitments you make to your
mind for example you have planned to wake up
early but as soon as the alarm rings you feel lazy
and lethargic and you hear a voice that says go
back to sleep which means that whatever
think, your mind is triggered in the opposite
direction.Now,why does that happen,how does
does that happen and how do you overcome that?

Sub topics:
How does that happen?
There are two kind of minds, monk mind and
monkey mind. We make commitments to our own
mind, decide numerous things for self- discipline
but when we try to implement those things we are
triggered in the opposite direction by our mind.
Now how does that happen?
To understand this, we first need to understand
difference between monk mind and monkey mind.
Monkey Mind:
It is always jumping from branch to branch. It is
always looking for next pleasure or that
gratification. It is always looking for that short term
win. It is part of that complains, compares and
criticizes but.
Monk Mind:
It is always focused on the root of the issue,
focused on discipline and long-term gain. It is
calm,composed and collaborative ,caring and
compassionate. So to make the transformations we
have to understand how mind works.

Conversation between mind and intelligence:

To overcome all this and create self discipline we
have to understand the difference between mind
and intelligence. E.g. for same:
Early in the morning ,alarm rings and a voice from
mind comes and says go back to sleep again
whereas at the other side other voice says you have
had enough of rest, wake up and start the day.
Here the first preference is what is known as mind
and the second one is intelligence.
For self-discipline knowing the difference between
these two terms is necessary.

Why does that happen?

The monk mind stands in between the senses
(sight, taste, hear, touch, smell) and mind. For
almost all of us monk mind has been asleep all the
time or has been lazy for a while and therefore we
have been in a recurring pattern. So now whenever
you want to restrict your mind in order to generate
self discipline divert your mind and activate your
monk mind.

How to overcome this:

There are four R’s to overcome all this and create
self discipline:
-Reason:
You should have a profound reason for why you
want to change or modify certain habits in you.
-Research:
Research really has a deep effect on your
mind.Researching and getting to know about a
person who has already acquired those habits
motivates you.
-Repetition:
Being consistent and considering those habits as
your priority will lead you to become self
disciplined.
-Responsibility:
Responsibility and accountability towards
something makes you more likely to get to your
destination.
My learning from the podcast:
This podcast made me believe that any habit
change has some kind of reward in it.Make
sure that you keep on reminding yourself that
how far you have come and just move ahead
to achieve self discipline by remembering the
four R’s.
