Once upon a time, there was a King named Sulahkromo.

The king was helped by a Prime Minister

named Raden Sidopekso. The Prime Minister had a wife named Sri Tanjung. She was so beautiful
that the king really wanted to marry his wife.

One day, the King assigned his Prime Minister to a long mission. While the Prime Minister was away
from his wife, the King tried to get Sri Tanjung. However he failed and he was very angry. Thus, when
Sidopekso went back, the King told him that his wife was such an unfaithful wife. Soon the Prime
Minister was very angry with his wife. Sri Tanjung said that it was untrue but Sidopekso didn’t
believe her and said that he would kill her. Then he brought his wife to the river bank. Before he
killed her and threw her into the river, his wife had said that her innocence would be proven After
Sidopekso killed her. After that, he threw her dead body into the dirty river.

The shocking fact happened not long after that when the river immediately became clean and began
to spread a wonderful fragrance around. Sidopekso said, “Banyu...Wangi...or Banyuwangi”. This
means “fragrant water”. Banyuwangi was born from the proof of noble and sacred love.
