Merchant ships typically turn in a circle with a diameter of 3-4 times their length between perpendiculars. During a turn, a ship experiences transfer, advance, drift angle, and heel. Transfer is the distance traveled from the original course to a 90 degree turn, advance is the distance along the original course during a full 360 degree turn, and tactical diameter is the distance from the original course to a 180 degree turn.

Turning circle: Transfer, advance and the Tactical
diameter of turning circle
Merchant ships usually turn in a circle having a diameter of about 3–4
times the length between perpendiculars (LBP). The larger the rudder, the smaller will be the Turning circle diameter(TCD). During the TCD maneuver, the ship will experience transfer, advance, drift angles and angle of heel.
TURNING CIRCLE : when a vessel is made to turn under a continuous helm
through 360 deg it will follow a roughly circular track called turning circle.
TRANSFER : It is the distance travelled by the ship measured from original
course line to the point when she alter her course by 90 deg.
ADVANCE : It is the distance travelled by ship along original course line
when she alter her course through 360 deg.
DRIFT ANGLE : It is the angle between the ship fore and aft line and tangent drawn to the turning circle.
TACTICAL DIAMETER : It is the distance travelled by the ship measured
from original course line to the point when she alter her course by 180 deg.
