Performance Task

MICROGARDEN

Introduction

Microgardening is growing plants under limited space, light, and water. This is usually done
in urban homes where there is no yard or land for growing large plants. Microgardens, in
this particular project, must be in containers that can be placed by the windows, on the
wall, or on tabletops. In microgardening, plants usually grown are edible greens that can
grow in small containers and often with no soil. The shoot (short stem, attractive foliage)
and root architecture can also be decorative. With “my small garden”, you can learn how to
propagate plants from seed to full-grown herbs, observing changes in their development,
discovering what the plant needs, while designing an attractive green spot in your home.

INSTRUCTIONS
SETUP DESIGN AND PLANNING
1. Get ideas and inspiration on microgardens from the internet.
2. Draw the design of the setup of your microgarden. Label the materials to be used for the
setup.
3. Indicate the list of materials that you will need.
4. Create a 3-page writeup of a brief description of the physical characteristics of your
plant, length of time from seed to a grown plant with dense foliage and roots (must be
at least about 1 month), propagation needs, plans in doing the microgarden, and source
of seeds.
5. Indicate the following subheadings in your writeup: Microgarden Illustration, Materials
Needed, Plants and their Characteristics, Timeline, and Budget Proposal.
6. Microgarden is not limited to 1 type of plant per pot/container. You may use whatever
seeds you have.

DIARY
Create a plant diary
1. Like a baby diary showing the progress of your plant.
2. This also includes data gathering, photo-documentation, and data interpretation.
3. Be creative (e.g. you can place photos in powerpoint and put some descriptions).
4. Make memories with your microgarden

VIDEO PRESENTATION
Create a short 3-minute summary video showing how YOU (NOT SOMEONE
ELSE) created your microgarden.
