Insulin Vial Self-Injection Counseling

1. Address the patient by name, introduce self with title

2. Verify DOB of patient

3. Wash/dry hands

4. Remove cap from vial (for rst time using vial)

5. Wipe top with alcohol swab

6. With new insulin syringe, draw up amount of air = volume being injected (with cap on)

7. Remove syringe cap and insert needle into vial

8. Inject air into vial while still at

9. Invert vial and draw desired volume

10. Place vial down on surface and remove syringe and set aside

11. Clean injection site with alcohol swab

a. Abdomen (2 inches away from naval)

b Thigh
C. Back of arm

d. Lower back

12. Pinch skin and insert needle, then remove pinch

13. Press plunger to inject insulin

14. Remove needle and recap with "scoop" method

15. Discard into sharps container

a. Patient can use hard plastic container at home such as empty detergent jug

16. Open ended ask for questions

17. Ask patient to teach back, correct any incorrect steps
